Makayla Dickens leads Eagles with 24 points and 10 rebounds.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Freshman Makayla Dickens tallied her third double-double of the season – 24 points and 10 rebounds – but it was not enough as Boston College fell to ACC foe Virginia, 79-77, in overtime at John Paul Jones Arena on Thursday night.
Â
The Eagles drop to 14-9 and 3-7 in ACC play, while the Cavaliers improve to 9-14, including 3-7 in conference play.Â
Â
Along with Dicken's 24 point-10 rebounds effort, junior forward Emma Guy added 18 points with eight boards. Sophomore guard Sydney Lowery pitched in with 10 points.
Â
The Eagles and Cavaliers battled back-and-forth in the early minutes, but Virginia made a strong push midway through the first quarter. With the game tied at 10-10, the Cavaliers utilized an 8-0 run to take an 18-10 and never looked back.
Â
Ending the first quarter with a six-point 23-17 advantage, Virginia kept the pressure on the BC defense. The Cavaliers extended its lead to 13, 37-24, heading into halftime.
Â
BC began to chip away at the deficit with a 10-0 run that was ignited by a lay-up by Guy. Dickens made it a two-possession game, 37-32, with back-to-back three-pointers and force Virginia to call a timeout.
Â
Coming out of the timeout, fellow freshman guard Marnelle Garraud (eight points, three assists) brought the Eagles back to one score, 39-37, with a lay-up and a three-pointer with six minutes to play in the period. Virginia answered with an 8-4 run to push its lead back to two scores, 47-41, but it did not hold for very long.
Â
Garraud capped off an 8-1 run with a long distance three-pointer with 2:11 to give BC its first lead, 49-48, since the six-minute mark of the first. The Eagles and Cavaliers exchanged the lead once before heading into the final quarter tied at 52-52.
Â
The final period of regulation was a barn-burner, consisting of three lead changes and four ties. Sophomore Milan Bolden-Morris opened the quarter knocking down a pair of free throws to give the Eagles a two-point, 54-52. The Cavaliers responded with a 4-1 and took a 57-55 lead. The teams battled back-and-forth throughout the quarter and forced overtime with the score tied at 62-62.
Â
Virginia set the tone in overtime, opening with a 6-2 run to build and 68-64 lead and never looked back, despite a valiant comeback attempt by Boston College.
