Taylor Ortlepp leads BC with 23 points, while Makayla Dickens added 20 points.
CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. – Junior Taylor Ortlepp and freshman Makayla Dickens combined for 43 points, but it was not enough as Virginia Tech stole a 95-86 victory over the Eagles on Sunday at Conte Forum in ACC action. Boston College is now 14-8 and 3-6 in the ACC, while Virginia Tech improved to 15-7 overall and 2-7 in the conference.
Ortlepp tied her career-high with seven three-pointers and finished with a team-high 23 points and five rebounds, while Dickens hit four three-pointers, 20 points and a career-high eight assists for the Eagles. Emma Guy chipped in with 14 points.
Virginia Tech went on an 8-0 run at the end of the third quarter that ignited the Hokies offense. BC led by as many as 16 points in the quarter but a buzzer-beater by Dara Mabrey cut the Eagles lead to nine points – 71-62.
The fourth quarter the Hokies opened up on a 6-0 run before two foul shots by Dickens stopped the run. Virginia Tech took the lead for good with 6:31 to play on a three-pointer by Aisha Sheppard (14 points). She would hit her second three-pointer at 4:51and Tech's lead was two points. A foul shot by Emma Guy cut the lead to one point, but that was the closest BC would get. Sheppard hit her third three-pointer of the quarter to put the Hokies six points with 3:09 to play. Virginia Tech would hit 10-of-10 foul shots in the final minute of play to seal the win.
After a Virginia Tech 8-0 run to open up the game, Boston College settled down after a time out and controlled most of the action. Ortlepp would hit three three-pointers in the first quarter and finished with 11 points as the Eagles held a 28-27.
BC went on a 13-2 run in the middle of the second quarter to push the lead to 43-33. With 2:15 to play in the quarter, the Hokies broke their drought with a layup by Regan Magarity (30 points). Tech hit two three-pointers in the final minute to cut the BC lead to four points. A layup at the buzzer by Clara Ford extended BC's lead, 47-41, at intermission.
In the third quarter, BC opened with an 8-2 run to push the lead to 55-43. Virginia Tech went to Regan Magarity (30 points, 14 rebounds), who kept her team in the game with 12 points in the quarter. BC pushed the lead to 16 points behind the long-range shooting from Ortlepp and Dickens. With BC up 71-55 with 1:38 to play, Virginia Tech went on an 8-0 run to end the quarter and BC's lead was 71-62 after three.
BC HIGHLIGHTS
- Taylor Ortlepp tied her career-high in three-pointers made with seven. It was the fifth time in her career she tallied seven long range shots in a game. She now leads BC with 57 three-pointers this season.
- Freshman Makayla Dickens tallied 20 points with a career-high eight assists. Dickens has scored in double-figures in 15 games, including 10 of the last 11 games.
- Boston College made 12 three-pointers in the game. It is the 10th time this season BC has tallied double-figures in three-pointers. In the last two games, Boston College has made 25-of-58 from long range.
