February 23, 2019 | Softball
GREENVILLE, NC – The Boston College softball team shutout the East Carolina Pirates 1-0 Saturday evening.
Â
How It Happened:
Â
The contest started out as a pitchers duel, with a scoreless tie through two innings. Susannah Anderson only allowed one hit over those first two innings, tossing two strikeouts in the process.
Â
Skip ahead to the top of the third inning, where Maddison Hamilton led off with a single to left field. Jules Trevino followed up with a walk, and Lexi DiEmmanuele put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over. With two runners in scoring position, Ellie Mataya hit a slow roller to first base. The Pirates first baseman came up throwing to the plate, but Hamilton slid in safe for the first BC run. Mataya reached safely at first, and Trevino advanced to third on the play.
Â
The Pirates threatened in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded and one out. Anderson retired the next two hitters on a force out at home, and a strikeout, to escape the inning unscathed.
Â
Anderson tossed four strikeouts, earning her first victory of the season. Mataya went 1-4 with the team's lone RBI in the Eagles third victory of the season.
Â
Up Next: The Eagles continue their weekend in Greenville with two games on Sunday. First pitch against James Madison is slated for 9 a.m., and game two against East Carolina begins at 11:30 a.m. Â
