Fossier Lifts Maine Past Boston College 2-1 in Overtime
February 23, 2019 | Men's Hockey
ORONO, Maine – Mitchell Fossier's left wing backhander through a screen with less than a minute remaining in overtime lifted Maine to its second straight 2-1 victory over Boston College on Saturday night as the Black Bears swept a weekend series at Alfond Arena.
The Black Bears improved to 10-8-4 in Hockey East and moved three points clear of BC in fifth place. The Eagles dropped their sixth straight game and fell to .500 at 9-9-3 in the league, remaining seventh with three games left in the regular season.
As the clock ticked under a minute in overtime, Maine pinned Boston College in its defensive zone and a loose puck came to Fossier inside the left faceoff dot. With a player from each team screening Joseph Woll (33 saves), Fossier shoveled a backhander inside the short side post to win the game at 4:09.
Boston College dominated the first period with 15 of the 17 total shots on goal during the frame. Not included in those numbers was a post rung by Julius Mattila from the left circle after beating Jeremy Swayman (36 saves) short side.
BC carried a 1-0 lead into the first intermission as David Cotton tipped an Oliver Wahlstrom wrister glove side on the power play at the 12:12 mark. Ben Finkelstein picked up the secondary assist on the game's opening goal.
Maine responded in the second period with 23 shots on goal, but the Eagles nearly doubled their lead on several Grade A chances five minutes into the middle frame. Swayman came out to cut down the angle on Logan Hutsko's partial breakaway, then denied Michael Karow as he drifted into the left circle on his forehand.
The Black Bears finally found the equalizer with 47 seconds left in the period when Brendan Robbins redirected Jakub Sirota's center point shot glove side to beat Woll.
The schools played a scoreless and cautious third period with no power plays for either side.
BC finished with a 37-35 shot advantage and closed the weekend 5-for-5 on the penalty kill, winning the special teams battle both nights.
