Seniors Lead Eagles to Program Win Record

The volleyball senior class capped its regular season finale with an impressive showing in a 3-2 win over NC State
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team (20-11, 11-7 ACC) capped off its regular season with a thriller of a five-set win over NC State (11-19, 6-12 ACC), earning its 20th victory on the season to match its all-time win record on Senior Day.
Four Eagles tallied double-digit points, led by senior Cat Balido who marked a team-best 16 kills and three block assists for 17.5 points. Classmate Jill Strockis followed closely behind, registering 15 kills and keeping up 12 digs for her second double-double of the season. Sophomore Jewel Strawberry also added 15 kills of her own despite only appearing in four sets. Juniors Amaka Chukwujekwu and Clare Naughton both contributed nine kills as the team totaled 69 to NC State's 62. Senior Jane DeJarld put up a season-best 39 assists in the comeback effort.
Chukwujekwu balanced the defense as well, contributing on five of BC's eight blocks through one solo and four assists. Balido followed closely behind tallying three block assists. Freshman libero Torey Baum kept up 18 digs while Strockis and Naughton tallied 12 each and Makenzie Morrison put up 10.
The victory matched BC's all-time program win record, as the Eagles last reached the 20-win mark in its final year in the Big East conference in 2004.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – BC found the early lead, taking a 6-3 advantage with kills from Kutschke, Balido, Chukwujekwu, Naughton and Strockis. The Wolfpack added two before Naughton and Strockis both tallied back-to-back kills to find a six-point advantage at 10-4 and force an NC State timeout. The visitors found two points out of the break, but a later 4-0 run for the Eagles brought its advantage to 17-9. NC State pushed back to reach within six points at its closest, but the Eagles earned the opening set win with a block from Balido and Chukwujekwu, 25-18.
Set 2 – NC State opened with a 3-1 lead before allowing BC to reach to just a one-point deficit at 6-5. The teams traded points before BC tied it up at 9-all with a solo block from Kutschke. An ace from Baum earned BC's first lead of the set, but the Wolfpack answered with two kills to go ahead. The Eagles added two back with a kill from Chukwujekwu and a block from Naughton and Sophie West, but it sparked a nine-point run for the Wolfpack which the Eagles would never catch up to. NC State evened the match with a 25-18 win.
Set 3 – The third set was a battle of point streaks as NC State opened with five straight before allowing seven in a row for the Eagles. The Wolfpack answered right back with six to find an 11-7 advantage. The Eagles added five of the next seven points to come within one point before taking the lead off of a three-point run at 15-14. NC State tied it right back and kept going, adding five straight points to find a 20-16 lead. Errors plagued the Eagles for the remainder as the set before the Wolfpack took the win on a kill from Lauryn Terry, 25-19.
Set 4 – The teams opened up evenly matched before BC added three straight to take a 6-5 lead. Points went to both sides with NC State having the slight advantage, finding an 11-8 score before BC added two to make it 11-10. The Eagles tied it at 12-12 with kills from Balido and Strawberry before the Wolfpack regained its edge with three unanswered points. An impressive run of four points for the Eagles put the home team on top, 19-17. Three more for NC State gave the Wolfpack a one-point advantage, leading into a six-point rally for the Eagles to close out the set and force a fifth set, capped with three kills from Strockis and two from Balido, 25-20.
Set 5 – Neither team held larger than a two-point lead through the decision set, despite NC State opening with a 3-1 advantage. Two kills from Strawberry tied it at 3-all before NC State answered with two of their own. BC gained its first lead with a solo block and a kill from Chukwujekwu to find an 11-10 lead which NC State quickly regained to force an Eagle timeout. Out of the break, the Eagles rattled off three straight points before allowing the Wolfpack's final of the afternoon, with Strawberry earning the match point kill, 15-13.
