The volleyball team suffered a four-set loss in the first round of the NIVC
HAMILTON, N.Y. –The Boston College volleyball team (20-12, 11-7 ACC) suffered a four-set loss to Colgate (23-7, 15-1 Patriot League) in the first round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship at Cotterell Court on Friday. The Eagles cap their season with a program-best 20 wins and their first-ever postseason tournament appearance in head coach Jason Kennedy's second year at the helm of the program.
Clare Naughton, Jill Strockis and Amaka Chukwujekwu each tallied eight kills as Chukwujekwu paced with a team-best .389 attack percent. Senior setter Jane DeJarld recorded the Eagles' only double-double of the night, registering 28 assists and 10 digs. Naughton and DeJarld both served up two aces.
DeJarld and Makenzie Morrison led the team in digs as each kept up 10. Strockis and Torey Baum followed closely behind, registering eight and seven, respectively. Seniors Cat Balido and Carly Kutschke combined for three blocks apiece to lead the team.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 –The Raiders held the pace through the opening set, jumping out to an early 14-3 lead capped through an 8-0 run. The Eagles answered back with four straight points before allowing another from Colgate, but the Raiders' initial lead was too much to surpass as the Eagles were held to just a .156 clip through the first set. Colgate took the match lead with a 25-19 win of the opening set.
Set 2 –BC bounced back with a 4-1 lead to open the second set. The Eagles held onto their lead tightly, finding a way to answer each of Colgate's points before a three-point stretch for the Raiders earned them their first lead of the set at 9-8. The Eagles quickly regrouped to rally off six straight points for a 14-9 lead, but the Raiders kept it close adding four of their own. A 5-1 stretch for BC gave the team some insurance as the Eagles prevented the Raiders from coming closer than three points, as kills from Naughton and Kutschke earned the win for BC and evened the match, 25-19.
Set 3 –The Eagles jumped ahead with a three-point run after being down 4-2 to make the score 5-4. The teams traded points back and forth, but a four-point rally for Colgate brought the Raiders' lead to 16-11. Colgate held off BC, only allowing six more points for the Eagles before a 4-1 run sealed the set in the Raiders' favor, 25-18.
Set 4 –BC looked to force a fifth set, jumping to a 10-4 lead to open the fourth set. The Raiders fought back to look to even the score but the Eagles had a four-point lead at 18-14. Colgate rallied back to rattle off 10 straight points and take a 24-18 lead over the Eagles, capping their win, 25-19, to advance to the second round of the NIVC.
