Eagles Battle But Drop 72-67 Decision to DePaul

Julian Rishwain and Jay Heath combine for 26 points on the afternoon
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Despite two second half runs for Boston College, the Eagles dropped a 72-67 decision to DePaul at home on Saturday.
Trailing by as many as 13 points - 54-41 wit 11:09 to play - BC cut it to four after nine unanswered. The 9-0 run was capped by a Jay Heath 3-pointer, making it 54-50 with 8:31 to play. The Eagles trailed, 59-50, with a little over six minutes to go, and began its push down the final stretch.
Similar to last year's matchup, BC's frenetic 14-6 push got it within one. A Nik Popovic 3-pointer with a minute to go made it 65-64. But DePaul's Charlie Moore drilled a late shot clock trifecta to end the run.
Heath made another 3-pointer with under 12 ticks remaining, but the Blue Demons sealed the win with two FT made.
The first half saw eight lead changes and five ties, with neither team gaining more than a four-point advantage. DePaul led 23-19 with 6:40 to go in the opening frame, but BC scored seven straight - five from Derryck Thornton - to take a 26-23 edge with 3:33 to go. DePaul closed the half, outscoring the Eagles, 7-2, to take a 30-28 lead at the break.

- Derryck Thornton scored 16 points on 5-of-15 shooting, including 1-of-2 from 3-point land and 5-of-6 from the foul line. He added four rebounds, three assists (eight turnovers), a blocked shot, and a steal.
- Julian Rishwain came off the bench to score a season-best 15 points. The 6-5 guard made 4-of-7 from beyond the arc and 3-of-4 from the foul line. He added three boards, a block, and a steal in 22 minutes.
- Jay Heath scored all 11 of his points in the second half, knocking down 3-of-4 from the perimeter over the final frame. He added three assists (zero turnovers) and a steal.
- Steffon Mitchell led the Eagles with nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals to go along with five points.
- Nik Popovic played 24 foul-plagued minutes, tallying seven points, three rebounds, an assist, and two blocks.
- The Eagles connected on 20-of-56 from the floor, making 10-of-24 from beyond the arc.
- DePaul commanded the glass, winning the overall battle of the boards, 47-28.
- +10; -13 - DePaul held a plus-10 advantage glass and outscored BC, 18-5, in second-chance points.
- Julian Rishwain and Steffon Mitchell registered efficiency ratings of 15.
- Jay Heath was the third BC player in double-digits in efficiency, logging a rating of 10.
