Warner’s Late Goal Lifts No. 7 Eagles Into Quarterfinals Over No. 11 Northwestern, 2-1
November 15, 2019 | Field Hockey
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Elizabeth Warner scored a goal with just over a minute left to lift the No. 7 Boston College field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over No. 11 Northwestern in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The win gives BC its fourth NCAA Tournament victory and first since 2015.
The Eagles had complete control throughout the first half, out-shooting the Wildcats, 9-4. BC had nothing to show for it, though, until Margo Carlin broke free down the right side and received a pass from Nell Webber on her reverse on the run and tucked a low-angle shot into the back of the net to take the lead with 31 seconds remaining in the first half.
BC would continue to have a hold on the game in the third period, but Northwestern would draw a penalty stroke at the 48:34 mark in the game. Northwestern's Bente Baekers stepped up to the spot and scored to tie the game at one.
Then after some back-and-forth action in the fourth period, Warner deflected a pass from Sky Caron on a penalty corner to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead with 1:06 remaining in the game.
