Massachusetts natives sign National Letters of Intent to Join the Eagles' Men's Basketball Program
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Head coach Jim Christian has announced that two future men's basketball student-athletes - DeMarr Langford Jr. and Justin Vander Baan - have signed their National Letters of Intent to continue their academic and athletic endeavors at Boston College.
"We are excited to announce that DeMarr and Justin have signed their national letters of intent. We welcome them and their families into our Boston College men's basketball family," said Christian. "They are outstanding young men with bright futures on and off the court. Boston College is a perfect fit for them, especially being Massachusetts natives, and they are perfect fits for our program."
Both Langford Jr. and Vander Baan play for the Mass Rivals AAU and head coach Vin Pastore. They are the first two student-athletes to sign with the Eagles from the storied grassroots basketball program.
DeMarr Langford Jr.
Guard - 6-5 - 195 - Worcester, Mass. / Brewster Academy
"DeMarr comes to us as a consensus top 100 nationally-ranked prospect. He has shined at the highest levels of basketball, from AAU with Mass Rivals throughout his high school and prep leagues. But what makes me most excited and proud to have him join our program is the exceptional character he displays on and off the court. Â
As a player, DeMarr has elite-level athleticism and versatility at the guard position, which allows him to defend multiple positions on the court. He has an explosive, quick first step and, with our focus on individual skill development within our program, he will evolve into a guard who can play both on and off the ball. As a person, DeMarr is primed and ready to make a major impact from the minute he arrives on our campus. He comes from a wonderful family who have all played basketball at the collegiate level."
What Others Are Saying About Langford
"DeMarr is someone that does not get too high or too low. He is driven, he is motivated, and he wants to continue to get better every single day. He is not complacent and there is absolutely no entitlement whatsoever. DeMarr is a tremendous teammate and young man; his parents have done an amazing job raising him. It is early in our season, but it's evident he has been very well-coached - at the grassroots level with Mass Rivals, as well as during his time at Putnam Science and St. Peter Marian."
- Jason Smith, Head Coach, Brewster Academy
"DeMarr is the type of high profile, New England recruit that Boston College has not had in a long time. He is as experienced and battle-tested as anyone in the region, with his play at Brewster and with Mass Rivals. His ability to contribute to winning starts defensively and will be immediately impactful with the way he moves the ball and rebounds."
- Adam Finkelstein, ESPN National Recruiting Analyst Â
"Boston College is getting the ultimate glue guy who will contribute to a winning culture. He will make an immediate impact, beginning on the defensive end, and possesses a combination of great skill, ability, and instincts on the court."
— Mike Yagmin, The Hoop Hustle
"DeMarr Langford is one of the best defenders nationally in his class and has become a weapon with the ball slashing to the basket. He is an elite defender, an elite rebounder, and on his way to becoming an elite scorer. He is oozing with upside."
- Vin Pastore, Head Coach, Mass Rivals Basketball Club
Justin Vander Baan
Center - 7-0 - 225 - Northbridge, Mass. / Whitinsville Christian
"Justin is going to make a major impact for us at Boston College, on and off the court. He is a skilled 7-footer, who has a true passion for the game. Justin fills a big need for us in the frontcourt and has shown his ability to play the game at the highest level with his time on the national circuit with Mass Rivals - one of the best AAU programs in the country.
He has been mentored by some outstanding coaches through high school and AAU play, who have helped spur on his development by allowing him to play in and away from the basket. At our elite camp this summer, Justin proved to our entire coaching staff that he is an ACC-caliber player with his best basketball still ahead of him. He comes from a first-class family and we are thrilled to welcome them to our program."
What Others Are Saying About Vander Baan
"Boston College is getting a 7-footer who loves the game of basketball. He is a very skilled post player with a desire to win at a high level. He is a gym rat who is always looking to add to his game. Boston College is adding a special young man to their program."
- Brady Bajema, head coach, Whitinsville Christian
"I think it shows tremendous foresight to recruit Justin Vander Baan as early and as strongly as Boston College did. You do not find true 7-footer that have good hands, soft shooting touch, and the mobility that he possesses very often. His upside is very high and has a bright future as he develops his natural tools."
- Adam Finkelstein, ESPN National Recruiting Analyst
"Vander Baan oozes with long-term potential. He's the type of young, raw prospect that Boston College has been able to develop during Jim Christian's tenure. Vander Baan's combination of size and shooting stroke - along with his desire to develop - are two things that will become even more of a weapon as he develops his skillset at BC."
— Mike Yagmin, The Hoop Hustle
"Justin Vander Baan has a great set of hands, unbelievable mobility, as well as exceptional touch that extends beyond the 3-point line. I am confident that he will play a major impact in the future of BC basketball."
