Boston College Head Coach Steve Addazio
Â
(Opening Statement) "Tough game. Two teams really battled back and forth with each other. Came down to who had the ball last. They were able to make a couple more plays than us in the end and came away with a hard-fought victory. I thought our kids played really hard. Thought Dennis (Grosel) came in, I thought he came in and had a lot of fire to him and a lot of leadership to him. I thought the look in our kid's eyes was great. I thought they were special guys making plays. At the end of the day, they made one more play than we did."
Â
(Talking about total yards in the game, and what did he see from the defense) "Well we had 566 and they had 6 whatever. There was a lot of offense on both sides of the field. Obviously, we'd like to do a better job getting off the field. It's up to us as coaches to do everything that we can to put our guys in the best position to be able to come up with a stop. We needed one stop. Three minutes and 30 seconds left and we needed one stop. So we got to go back and see where we can help our guys better. Where we can put them in better positions. Clearly, we don't want to be in that position giving up that many yards."
Â
(What can you tell us about Anthony's (Brown) situation) "Lower leg injury. I do not know the details of it yet. Literally, haven't even spoken to the doctor and I'm quite confident they would not know either at this point."
(Talking about Dennis (Grosel) going forward if Brown is injured for an extended period) "I thought Dennis showed a lot of grit and poise. Made plays in both the run game and the throw game. Of course, we have Matt (Valecce) as well. Those are two guys who are great, hard-working, high character guys who got to get ready to play. That's ball. I'm very, very sad for Anthony, but we got to go see what the extent of his injury is. We have to continue getting Dennis and Matt ready to play. We have our bye week, we get through the bye week. We've been through some real wars, both mentally and physically. Our guys need a break so we're gonna do that. We will come back together and we're gonna continue to push forward to our next game."
Â
(How much is the bye week needed, following many tough games) "It's ball. These games are always tough games. I have seen unbelievable improvement in our football team. I have seen tremendous toughness and character. On offense, I've seen unbelievable explosiveness. We probably lead several categories on offense. On defense, we've been a little up and down. We've got to smooth that out right there. We've got a bunch of guys who haven't played a bunch of football over there and there's not gonna be a silver bullet. I can see myself from the sideline. It's something in the coverage one time, it's something in the front another time. It's always something a little different, which no one wants to hear I understand that. It's a byproduct of a lot of inexperience but we've got to use the bye week to grow that up. You've seen us shore that up. We've seen that happen with us a bit. Am I naive enough to think that this will go away one day, take like an antibiotic or something. I also know that we have a bunch of inexperienced young guys out there. We have to continue to coach them and develop them because they have talent. We have a talented young group on defense and we have to keep developing that. That's really important and a very talented group on offense. This is a football team that has the ability and this is a team that will stick together. This is the infancy of this group of guys right now. I'm excited about that. We just have to keep growing, and that's it."
Â
(Can you talk about the roller coaster of a game? Does it feel like they made the right plays?)
"Honestly, I just feel like I'm proud of the way our guys battled. I thought they fought really hard. If you didn't enjoy the competition of that game, I don't know what to say. These two teams battled the hell out of each other. When you have those games, when you're a winner, you win the game, everything will be really nice. When you don't you overlook everything else. What about this and what about this and what about this, I'm really not in the mood to do that right now. I'd much rather get on the video, correct it, and work with it as we would do whether we win a game or if we lose a game. Ride the roller coaster. It is what it is. It's college football. We've been in this a long time, the old saying 'steady the boat'. That's how I feel right now. Steady the boat, keep building your team. We've got a talented team and I like to be around this football team. I told them in there today, 'I'm proud to be your coach'. I got into this thing to be around high character young men with strong faith. They've got an unbelievable will. That's why I got into this thing. That's why I'm coaching right now. I'm coaching those kind of guys right now. I'm energized to say, yeah, am I disappointed we lost today, heck yeah. I'm energized to say we can get back to work, keep growing, keep molding, and keep building this football team. I'm not interested in what went wrong. I'm interested in what went right and how do we work on things that will make us better. As I told our team and I'll say to anybody is, this is where you have a great opportunity to test your mettal and your faith and your character. I think I'd give us an A+ in that category. I like where we're going to head and I'm excited about it."Â
Â
(You came in leading the ACC rushing wise, what was the passing for?) "They were playing a compressed box. That's why those big throws roll. They've got a lot of those guys in the box to stop the running game. So we rushed for almost 260 on 560 something yards of offense, so we had to throw the ball and most of those were great throwing opportunities and that's the way every game goes. In terms of you see where you can run it, you see where you can throw it, you try to have balance and this is the year that we have plenty of offense. We also have to take care of things that we can do better on offense as well. Everybody's got to stay good at running when we run and rolling a little bit harder and squeezing the air out of where we can squeeze it out of. We've got a strong run attack, but we're also tied for the number one team in the conference for explosive plays and I'm sure we added to that today."

(Does it feel like the offense has on its shoulders anything different from in the past where defensively you knew what you had but now it's like hey if we gotta score 40 we gotta go score 40?) "That is the plan on every drive to try to go score. Try to score every drive and put as many points as we can I know the defense has it and I have all the faith in the world in them to get the job done. Obviously, the ball didn't fall our way tough loss, it's a team thing and everyone could have done something better, including myself."
(When AB (Anthony Brown- QB) went down that was a critical but, Dennis comes in but AB is out. So what did you guys have to do?) "I have all the faith in the world in Dennis, we all did. Next man up obviously it is tough seeing AB go down. I try to give my all for him (AB) and do more for him. I think the world of Dennis."
(Are there no details about the injury to AB (Anthony Brown), or what the injury is or how long it could keep him out. But, if it is for an extended period, what do you have to make up for in his absence? What happens from that point?) "I don't think things are going to change. We have faith in everyone and when everyone steps on the field everyone has got to get the job done. Nothing will change."
Dennis Grosel, QB, r-So.
(I know you guys have the right mentality so just walk us through what was going to your head when AB went down)Â "I know I had a lot of support from everyone in the team and just everything we work for since training camp leading towards the end. So what was going through my head is just you know, make the simple plays, just keep it rolling and keep them to first down, and I thought we did a pretty job at that, and I had trust in everyone else and they have trust in me. So, that's how it all works."Â Â
(AB is on crutches, he's on the side line, got you up. I mean describe that dynamic, and that little bit of that dialogue)Â " I mean we are super close. AB is a great guy, and you know when things went down he is the own and he did not wanna go in the tent, didn't want to go to the locker room. He stood there and watched us play, and watched me do everything I could. You know I really supported him through his career here, and he just supported me back. And he is on the side line, he was seeing what I was seeing. Dialogue between us is everything. And you know what we were seeing what looks good what looks bad, and open communication."Â Â Â
(You guys overcame a lot of adversity, get down two touchdown came back actually take the lead, had the lead late in the game especially when you came in and talk about that and I know there is no giving up, and you could of folded a couple times. Especially with the injury, and you came in and kind of give them start) "We're a tough team. We are a never die team and that's pretty evident in the way we play. The support and the trust between the team is just super strong, and it's evident out there in the way we play, the way we care for each other on and off the field, even in the locker room there are special moments. There is not much to say but just knowing that we have each other's back so, you know, we're gonna reset and go on to the next one with the same mindset and not let this loss deter the season."Â
(How difficult is it to lose a game like this at the end, when you look like you have it won. I know it's disappointing and can you kinda talk about that)Â " Yeah, it doesn't feel good. It hurts but, you know, our mindset was to focus as much as we can, and defense did what they could, worked their ass off I respect them. You know it's just the way we play and battled and answer the call when our numbers were called."
