Eagles Remain Undefeated After Beating Yale 5-2
January 27, 2019 | Women's Tennis
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College improved to 5-0 on Sunday afternoon, pulling out a 5-2 victory over Yale at the Flynn Recreation Complex. Jackie Urbinati, Dasha Possokhova and Laura Lopez proved to be the difference in singles after the Eagles and Bulldogs were tied 2-2.
Following a 7-5 doubles victory for the tandem of Lopez and Yufei Long, Possokhova and Natasha Irani clinched the doubles point for BC in a tight 7-6 match against Caroline Amos and Kathy Wang.Â
"This match had lots of momentum twists and turns," said head coach Nigel Bentley. "We kept fighting hard to the very end though. I thought our conditioning was a big factor. Earning the doubles point was huge, it came down to Natasha and Dasha and they were down a break but they evened the match and then played a flawless tiebreaker."
Long earned a convincing victory from the No. 2 singles slot to set the table, defeating Caroline Dunleavy 6-1, 6-3. Possokhova clinched her second set 7-5 to dispatch of Wang, while Urbinati came back to beat Raissa Lou 6-3 in the final set to help seal the team victory.Â
"Yufei had a big day, her enthusiasm is contagious and really gave our team a lift," Bentley added. "Jackie had an awesome comeback in singles. She dropped a tough first set tiebreaker and was down 4-1 in the second but found her groove and really played a high level to win her match. That really started the rally and our whole team fed off of her. Dasha and Laura were very strong mentally in closing out their matches. This was a complete team win for us against a strong Yale team."
Boston College travels to face Harvard next Friday (Feb. 1) at 7 p.m. before hosting Syracuse in the ACC opener on Sunday (Feb. 3) at 11 a.m.
