Cloud Nine: Eagles Earn Weekend Sweep in Hanover

BC moves to 9-0 with three-set win over Dartmouth
HANOVER, N.H. –  In another thrilling three-set victory, the Boston College volleyball team closed out the Dartmouth Invitational with a 25-19, 25-20, 25-20 sweep of the host Big Green on Saturday night in Leede Arena to remain undefeated on the season.

The Eagles (9-0), who did not lose a set all weekend, hit 43 kills and 21 errors on 122 attempts for a .180 clip while holding the Green to a .044 attack percentage (24 kills – 19 errors – 113 total attempts).

Dartmouth (2-4) out blocked the Eagles 14-10 and served up five aces to BC's four, but couldn't generate the offense to topple Boston College. BC bested the Green in assists (42-20) and digs (64-48).

The Eagles had a balanced offensive charge with six players hitting five-or-more kills. Senior McKenna Goss led Boston College with nine kills, while sophomore Ally Mullen had eight. Juniors Jill Strockis and Cat Balido recorded seven apiece, followed by sophomores Clare Naughton and Amaka Chukwujekwu with six and five kills, respectively.

Chukwujekwu and Mullen shared the team lead in blocks with five each. Junior Makenzie Morrison tallied 24 digs to lead all players while junior Jane DeJarld recorded a match-high 21 assists.

Balido was named the Dartmouth Invitational MVP and joined Goss and Mullen on the all-tournament team.

-BC handed Dartmouth its first set losses of the weekend. Prior to the match, both the Eagles and the Big Green had won the weekend's games in straight sets.
-BC has won its last 15 sets and is outscoring opponents by 115 (392-277) in that stretch.
-Six Eagles hit five or more kills, led by McKenna Goss with nine.
-Dartmouth's 24 kills are the second-fewest by an opponent this season. BC also held the Green to the second-lowest attack percentage (.044) by an opponent in 2018.
-Cat Balido was named the tournament MVP, joining Goss and Ally Mullen on the all-tournament team

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – The Big Green started with a 3-1 lead, but the Eagles were hot on their heels and forged five ties through 8-8 until two Dartmouth errors gave Boston College the 10-8 advantage. Dartmouth tied the match up at 11-11 and the teams went point-for point, tied through 14-14. BC went 5-2 to lead 19-16, scoring on a Cat Balido ace that forced a Big Green timeout. The Eagles scored two straight on a kill and a Dartmouth error to lead 21-16, driving Dartmouth to use another timeout to regroup. BC finished the set going 4-3 to hold off the Big Green, 25-19.

Set 2 – Boston College jumped to a 3-1 advantage, but Dartmouth scored three in a row to take the 4-3 lead. The Eagles regrouped with a timeout, scoring five of the next six points to lead 8-5. Dartmouth cut into the lead, 8-7, but the Eagles pulled back away, 14-9, with a 6-2 surge. After a Big Green timeout, the Eagles went 8-3 to lead 22-12, but Dartmouth found a five-point surge to close the gap, 22-18. Boston College delayed the charge to win 25-20.

Set 3 – Dartmouth went 3-0 to begin the frame, but Boston College quickly knotted it up at 5-5. Dartmouth took six of the next nine to lead 11-8, but three straight Green errors tied the set at 11 all. The teams split the next eight points evenly (15-15) until back-to-back kills from Balido gave BC a two-point advantage (17-15) that pressured the Green into a timeout. After trading short runs, the Eagles finished off the sweep with a 4-2 rush, claiming another 25-20 victory.

UP NEXT
The Eagles return to Boston for the New England Challenge, Sept. 13-15. BC will travel to Harvard for a 7 p.m. match on Thursday before hosting UMass Lowell on Friday in a 6 p.m. contest. The weekend closes with the Eagles playing Northeastern on Saturday at 7 p.m.
