Roelfsema's First Career Goal Lifts BC Over BU, 1-0
September 06, 2018 | Women's Soccer
Eagles improve to 7-0-0 with win over in-state rival BU.
BOSTON, Mass. – Boston College sophomore Mijke Roelfsema picked a good night to tally her first career goal. The Eagles midfielder scored in the 30th minute to lead BC past in-state rival Boston University, 1-0, at Nickerson Field on Thursday night.
Boston College improved to 7-0-0 on the season and will host Temple on Sunday at 1 p.m. Boston University dropped to 1-6.
The Eagles undefeated start is the best start since the 2006 season, when BC went 9-0. In 2016, BC opened up with a 9-0-1 run.
Roelfema, a native of the Netherlands, played in 18 games last year with 11 starts. Against Boston University, Roelfema started in the midfield for the second consecutive game.
She was active from the start, stepping up defensively and staying involved on the offensive side. Roelfsema scored when BC set up for a corner kick. Coffey's serve was cleared out of the box and Carly Leipzig and a BU defender battled for a 50-50 ball in the box. The ball bounced toward Roelfsema, who lobbed a left-footed shot over the BU goalkeeper Amanda Fay and a defender standing on the end line in the 30th minute of the match.
At the half, Boston College defense shut down the Terriers offense as they recorded no shots.
In the second half, Boston University's first shot came in the 47th minute off a header from 20 yards out. BC's goalkeeper Alexis Bryant handled the shot easily to keep the Eagles in front, 1-0.
The Eagles attack pushed forward as rookie Kayla Duran's shot in the 57th minute off a set piece sailed high. Olivia Vaughn's shot went wide two minutes later. The flurry of offense continued for BC as Gaby Carreiro had a shot from 24-yards out that just went wide of the goal.
The most dangerous shot by the Eagles in the half came off another left-footed shot from Roelfsema from 22-yards out in the 67th minute of the game. Fay, BU's keeper, dove to her left just getting her hand of the ball to deflect it wide of the post to keep her team within one goal of BC.
The Eagles held a 17-4 edge in shots and had seven corner kicks to three by the Terriers.
Graduate senior Alexis Bryant had two saves in her seventh victory of the season.
