Shaw caps memorable weekend with first major league home run.
By: Athletic Communications
The news came down Friday afternoon as sources began to report that the San Francisco Giants were set to call up their No. 5 prospect Chris Shaw from Triple-A. Earlier in the day, San Francisco traded veteran outfielder Andrew McCutchen to the New York Yankees at the waiver deadline necessitating the need for an outfielder on its MLB roster.
Shaw, an All-American during his days at Boston College, earned the promotion and was inserted into the lineup that night against the New York Mets for his MLB debut. A first-round pick of the Giants in 2015, he became the 41st BC player to reach the big leagues, the first since Tony Sanchez (2013 – Pittsburgh) and the first from Mike Gambino's tenure as head coach.
In his debut, Shaw came through to break a scoreless-tie against Mets right-hander Zach Wheeler with a seventh-inning sacrifice-fly for his first career RBI as the Giants went on to a 7-0 victory. The long weekend was capped by Shaw blasting his first career hit; a 468-foot home run to right-center at Coors Field in Colorado in a pinch-hit spot that gave San Francisco a late 8-7 lead. He followed the footsteps of legendary BC head coach Eddie Pellagrini with his first MLB knock leaving the yard.
The Hudson Valley Renegades of the Single-A Short-Season New York-Penn League wrapped up a McNamara Division Championship on Friday night under the direction of first-year manager Blake Butera. The former BC infielder, debuted in June as the youngest manager in professional baseball and led the Tampa Bay Rays' affiliate to a 45-30 record heading into the playoffs.
