CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The No. 9 Boston College field hockey team enjoyed a week-long stretch of no games as they prepare to travel to Fairfield for a non-conference matchup at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30. The Eagles are 6-3 so far this season, including three wins over ranked opponents.
The Eagles are coming off of a perfect busy week as they saw three games within six days. They defeated Northeastern, No. 10 Virginia, and New Hampshire within the stretch – only allowing one goal over the three games in the 2-1 win at Northeastern.
The performance earned junior goalkeeper Sarah Dwyer both an ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week award and an NFHCA honorable mention. She played 166:36 over the three games, only allowed one goal and faced 16 shots. She is the first Boston College field hockey player to have received an ACC Player of the Week award twice in the same season since joining the conference in 2005.
Freshman goalkeeper Jonna Kennedy saw her second career game as she relieved Dwyer following three Eagle goals against New Hampshire. Head coach Kelly Doton was pleased with the rookies' performance, sharing that "Kennedy's level isn't far off from Dwyer's -- each and every week it's going to be a goalkeeping competition so whoever is going to be in cage starting on Sunday against Fairfield is based on whatever happens this week."
The Eagles are led by four goal-makers in graduate student Brooke Matherson, senior captain Frederique Haverhals, and sophomores Fusine Govaert and Elizabeth Warner. Each has four goals on the season heading to Fairfield, as Matherson has 11 total points and Haverhals has recorded 10.
While Boston College and Fairfield have only met twice in their histories, holding a 1-1 tie all-time. The Stags are currently on a six-game win streak, three-game shutout streak, and hold an 8-1 overall record. They play at Sacred Heart on Friday, Sept. 28 before returning home to face the Eagles on Sunday. Six of their eight wins have been decided by at least two goals in the Stags' favor.
The Stags are led by Danielle Profita who has recorded six goals and four assists for 16 points in 2018. Closely behind is Emma Matlach, who has five goals and three assists. Goalkeeper Zoe Rosen averages 1.01 goals allowed per game, backed by 27 saves so far this season. Â
