HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – UMass Lowell started the night with a win, topping BC 25-21 in set one. The River Hawks began with a narrow 7-5 lead until hitting a 7-2 surge that gave them a 14-7 advantage. BC edged UML 6-5 over the next 11 points but took a timeout when the River Hawks took a 19-13 lead on two Eagles' errors. BC won eight of the next 14 points, but the gap proved too large for BC to close in time.
Set 2 – The second frame saw 11 tie points and two lead changes, but the Eagles came out on top, 25-23, to tie the match at 1-1. Neither team won more than one point in a row to start the frame until a pair of bad UML sets gave BC a 6-4 lead. The River Hawks came back with four unanswered to lead 8-6 but BC quickly tied the score at 8-8. Boston College went 5-2 to lead 13-10 and force a UML break, out of which the teams traded one- and two-point runs to remain within just a point of one another. All knotted at 21-21, the Eagles took a regroup and went 4-2 from the timeout to edge out a win, 25-23.
Set 3 – UMass Lowell took a 7-5 lead to start the set, forcing a BC timeout to address three Eagles' errors. Boston College went 6-1 after the break, driving the River Hawks to take a timeout when they fell behind 11-8. UML edged BC 8-7 over the next 15 points, but still trailed 18-16 at the BC timeout. Errors hurt the River Hawks late, who gave up points on three errors in the final plays. BC took advantage and won the set, 25-21, to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Set 4 – BC played its best offense in the final set, hitting a .500 clip, while out blocking UML 5-0. Starting with a 3-0 lead early, BC widened the gap to 9-4 at the first River Hawks' timeout. The Eagles went 6-1 out of the break, sending UML right back into a timeout after three-straight kills from Clare Naughton put BC up 15-5. The rest of the set was all BC as the Eagles doubled up on UML 10-5 to close the set, 25-10, and the match, 3-1.
Senior McKenna Goss on rebounding from Friday's loss with this win.
"It was a huge shift in momentum that we needed. It was still a scrappy game but we used it to get in system and that last game in that match really made us more comfortable and more confident going into tomorrow's match."
