BC Plays to 1-1 Draw with Holy Cross
September 11, 2018 | Men's Soccer
Eagles pour it on in OT, hit three posts but can't find winner.
NEWTON, Mass. – The Boston College men's soccer team jumped out to an early lead on Tuesday night against Holy Cross, but the Crusaders were able to equalize and hold a ferocious offensive Eagles' attack for the rest of the game. The two non-conference teams played to a 1-1 tie at the Newton Campus Fields.
The Eagles opened the scoring, with Simon Enstrom finding the net in the 12th minute.
The game steadied out for the next 20 minutes. and with about 10 to play in the half, the Eagles' defense did well to hustle back to keep the lead. First, Joe Kellett sprinted back to get in front of and stand-up a Holy Cross forward and then a few minutes later, Abe Bibas and Tyler Stott converged on a streaking opponent. However, the visitors would knot it up, 1-1, in the 42nd minute.
David Longo was strong on the back line, handling 1-vs-1 situations with his back to goal multiple times in each half. He also got involved offensively in the first half, executing a slick turn deep near the flag to center a pass off a corner.
As the second half wore on, the Eagles carried the momentum. Callum Johnson had a nice look that was saved by a defender and then Kristofer Konradsson had his shot expertly parried away by Henry Stutz. A BC shot wouldn't rip the twine, though, and the Eagles went to overtime for the third time this season.
It would be Konradsson with the long-distance try off the post just 90 seconds into the first extra period. Enstrom's header – after a beautiful service from Tyshawn Rose on the left flank – hit the crossbar minutes later. Konradsson's deep curling shot in the second overtime period also hit the post
While the Eagles (2-0-3) held the big edge in shots on goal at 12-1, the Crusaders (0-2-2) did well to hold them to long distance shots that Stutz was able save. Antonio Chavez Borrelli was strong on corners for the Eagles, including a key punch in the second half.
Stutz finished with 10 saves while the team had a total of 11.
Boston College returns to action on Friday, Sept. 14, when the team hosts ACC foe Lousiville. The teams will kick off at 7 p.m. at the Newton Campus Soccer Field in a game that will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.
