
Eagles Overpower Lopes in GCU Invitational Finale

BC remains undefeated after sweeping Grand Canyon
PHOENIX, Ariz. – In a dominant offensive effort, the Boston College volleyball team closed the GCU Invitational with a sweep of host Grand Canyon (4-2), 25-17, 25-17, 25-13, on Saturday night at GCU Arena.
The Eagles, now 6-0 on the season, hit a season-high attack percentage of .438 (49 kills – 7 errors – 96 total attempts) while holding the Lopes to .202 percent (31 – 12 – 94).
Four Eagles hit double-digit kills, led by sophomore Amaka Chukwujekwu and junior Jill Strockis with 11 apiece, followed by junior Cat Balido and senior McKenna Goss with 10 each.
Junior Jane DeJarld led the team with 26 assists while sophomore Madison McKnight served up three of the Eagles' six service aces. Chukwujekwu led BC with three block assists and junior Makenzie Morrison saved a match-high 12 digs.
Strockis was named the GCU Invitational MVP and Morrison was named Top Libero, joining DeJarld and Chukwujekwu on the all-tournament team.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – After trading points to tie 8-8, the Eagles went on a 4-0 run for a 12-8 advantage and a GCU timeout. The Lopes fought to earn points back, but the Eagles always stayed a few steps ahead, leading by six (17-11) when GCU used its second timeout. The teams split the next 10 points evenly (22-16) before BC took three of the last four points to win 25-17.
Set 2 – Boston College kept the offense swinging in set two, hitting .417 to overpower the Lopes' defense and win the set, 25-17. GCU came out fast, trading blows with the Eagles to keep the set knotted through 7-7. BC surged on a 9-2 run to lead 16-9 at the Lopes' timeout before back-to-back kills from Cat Balido put BC up 18-9. GCU went 8-6 in an attempt to rally, but the BC lead was too great in the end.
Set 3 – BC took a 6-3 lead to start the set, earning four points off of kills and another from a Madison McKnight ace. The teams went point-for-point until a pair of Lopes' errors gave BC a 12-8 advantage. GCU took a timeout but the regroup favored the Eagles, who went 5-0 out of the break to lead 17-8. The Eagles rolled to a 25-13 win after finishing off the set on an 8-5 surge.
