The field hockey team travels to face No. 2 Maryland and No. 12 Northwestern
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.: The Boston College field hockey team prepares to travel to College Park, Maryland for the annual ACC/Big Ten Cup tournament. They will face No. 4 Maryland (3-0) in an evening matchup at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 31, before taking on No. 12 Northwestern Sunday morning at 11 a.m. The Eagles have participated in the tournament annually since 2015.
The Eagles started their season off strong with a regular non-conference matchup at Quinnipiac. They shut out the Bobcats, 7-0, led by five points (2 g, 1 a) from sophomore Fusine Govaert and three points (1 g, 1 a) from graduate student Brooke Matherson. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Dwyer recorded her fourth career shutout. Freshman Nell Webber notched her first career goal while classmates Sky Caron and Eva Van de Mierop both found spots in the starting lineup. Friday's win put the Eagles in the second spot for points per game (17.00) and scoring margin (7.00) in the NCAA.
Head coach Kelly Doton believes that the team is ready to face the coming challenge: "We are expecting a very good Maryland team Friday and a very good Northwestern team Sunday to be competing against us in the B1G/ACC Cup. We know we have to execute the game plan and play our brand of hockey vs. each opponent in order to win. I think the players are looking forward to the challenge and I'm excited to see how we have grown as a team since the first weekend of competition."
Maryland, who has already played three games in the 2018 season, holds a 2-11 series record over the Eagles. The Terps have won each of their three matchups, defeating Pacific (3-0), California (5-0), and UC Davis (6-1) over a weekend on the west coast. Nike Lorenz (5 g) and Linnea Gonzales (4 g) lead the Terps in scoring.
Northwestern holds a 1-1 record going into the weekend. They are set to take on Duke on Friday at 3 p.m. before facing the Eagles on Sunday. The Eagles hold a 2-3 all-time series record over the Wildcats, winning their last matchup in 2017 in double-overtime with a final score of 3-2. Puck Pentenga leads the Wildcats with one goal and three assists over their two contests of the season. Â
