Eagles gearing up for first scrimmage
NEWTON, Mass. – The Boston College men's soccer team held its third preseason practice at the sunny Newton Campus Fields on Friday.
The Eagles will practice again tomorrow before hosting the University of Massachusetts for a Sunday afternoon scrimmage. It will be a good first test for the Eagles, as the Minutemen laid claim to both the Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament titles in 2017 en route to a NCAA Tournament bid.
Goalie World
After warming up, the field players and keepers took the opposite ends of the field for skill work…the goaltenders rotated in and out of goal to work on shots and follow up shots, with the keeper in goal being pounded with shots by the three outliers…the netminders' session wrapped up with a quick game in which the three extra goaltenders and a coach passed the ball around the box with the ability to shoot at any moment.
Constant Touches
After warming up, the field players and keepers took the opposite ends of the field for skill work…the field players underwent some conditioning through touches, working hard in timed periods to one touch the ball to teammates at cones within a small area...the players then split into teams for a best-of-three series.
Situations, Intensity
The squad closed out practice with 45 minutes of dealing with odd-man situations on a shortened field – one side with two extra players – before playing 11-vs-11…associate head coach Bob Thompson preceded this final session by saying that "Goals are scored mostly by mistakes," and the players took notice to work on marking, denying passes, and staying in line...Roni Diniz had some nice flashes and finishes close to goal…Abe Bibas had a couple of nice, timely clearances off the goal line...Tyshawn Rose and Trevor Davock combined for a nice give-and-go down the left flank, with Rose eventually muscling his way for a goal at the left post…once "Next goal wins!" was called out, the Eagles played with a heightened intensity…Davock eventually scored the practice-ending goal with a mid-range shot.
