Thirty-game slate kicks off in Power Gym
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Under first-year head coach Jason Kennedy, the Boston College volleyball team will face a steady succession of high-level competition with its 2018 schedule. The Eagles will play a 30-game slate, including 13 home matches in Power Gym, and match up with six opponents that made the NCAA tournament in 2017.
"We're going to be taking the first non-conference out of region trip that this team has taken since 2012 when we head out to Phoenix," Kennedy said. "We have a good amount of athletes on our roster from the west coast, so it's exciting to get them a chance to play a little closer to home. The first four weeks will give us a good idea as a coaching staff to see where we're at on our side of the net before we need to tackle the start of conference play."
The Eagles open their campaign at home, hosting Hartford, Providence and Sacred Heart at the 10th-annual Boston College Invitational, Aug. 24-25. The following weekend BC travels to the Grand Canyon University Invitational, Aug. 31- Sept. 1, to play with the Lopes, Jacksonville State and Southern Utah.
The third weekend of the season, BC will join Lafayette and Siena at the Dartmouth Invitational, Sept. 7-8. The Eagles will finish off non-conference play with the New England Challenge, playing at Harvard Sept. 13 before hosting UMass Lowell on Sept. 14. BC will close the weekend playing at Northeastern on Sept. 15.
"I'm excited about taking on the ACC schedule for the first time and learning some of the ins and outs of the conference," Kennedy said. "With six teams that made the NCAA Tournament last year from our conference, we will be playing a tournament-caliber team just about every weekend."
The Eagles' 18-game league schedule will kick off in Power Gym as BC hosts Clemson on Sept. 21 and Georgia Tech on Sept. 23. The team then heads out to North Carolina for a pair of games, facing Duke and Wake Forest on Sept. 28 and 30, respectively, before traveling to Virginia (Oct. 5) and co-ACC champ Pittsburgh (Oct. 7).
The following week, the Eagles host Florida State (Oct. 12) and Miami (Oct. 14) before welcoming NC State (Oct. 19) and North Carolina (Oct. 21) to Chestnut Hill. BC heads back on the road for four straight matches, playing co-ACC champ Louisville on Oct. 26 and Notre Dame on Oct. 28, then facing Syracuse on Oct.31 and Virginia Tech on Nov. 4.
The Eagles have a three-game homestand, hosting Louisville on Nov. 9, Virginia Tech on Nov. 16 and Virginia on Nov. 21, before finishing off the regular season at Clemson on Nov. 23.
The first and second rounds of the 2018 NCAA Tournament run Nov. 29- Dec. 1, with advancing teams competing in single-elimination regional matches at campus sites, Dec. 7-8. Each of the four regional champions will advance to the championship final site at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Dec. 13 and 15.
