Eagles’ juniors honored for stand-out weeks for the 16-0 lacrosse team
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College lacrosse's junior attack Sam Apuzzo and junior midfielder Dempsey Arsenault swept the ACC weekly lacrosse awards on Tuesday as both were honored for their stand-out performances as the second-ranked Eagles went 2-0 and claimed their first-ever ACC regular-season championship.
Â
Apuzzo took the ACC's Offensive Player of the Week nod for the third time this season, while Arsenault earned the league's Defensive Player of the Week award to mark her first weekly award of the year. The duo was vital to the Eagles' unblemished week, not only leading the way on the offensive end of the field, but also putting in impressive defensive efforts, as well.
Â
On Wednesday, Apuzzo shared the Eagles' scoring lead with five points against No. 17 Dartmouth, including the game-capping goal after the Big Green rallied back from a five-goal halftime deficit pull within one with under 10:00 to play. She also added two ground balls, a game-high eight draw controls and caused two turnovers in the 13-10 victory.
Â
On Saturday against No. 13 Virginia Tech, Apuzzo's offensive effort paced the Eagles to a 9-7 victory, a program-best 6-0 mark in league play and the team's first-ever ACC regular-season title. Her first goal of the day pushed BC to its biggest lead of the afternoon at 5-2 right before the half, but she saved three of her four goals for the vital second half after VTech mounted a comeback. Twice she responded to Virginia Tech pulling within a goal – at 5-4 and 6-5 – to give BC back its two-goal edge. However, her final goal – the game-winning tally – snapped a 7-7 deadlock with 12:26 to play. She won the draw after the Hokies' game-tying goal, and then chased down a ground ball after a save to keep the Eagles' attack live. After she scored the eventual game-winner, she won the next draw control at 8-7 and BC kept VTech off the board the rest of the way to secure the win.
Â
No player was more instrumental in a Boston College game last week than Arsenault as she played all 120 minutes and stood out on both ends of the field.
Â
On Wednesday against the Big Green, not only did she led all players with four goals and shared the game's scoring lead with five points, but Arsenault also won six draw controls, caused three turnovers and added four ground balls in the tight victory.
Â
On Saturday against the Hokies, her defensive effort – especially in the waning minutes of the second half – secured the win to give the Eagles their highest-ever conference win total (6). A magnet to the ball all day, she collected six ground balls, added two draw controls and caused one turnover, and her mark was held to a single goal and was forced into three turnovers. Overall, the Hokies scored only seven goals, their lowest mark in ACC play this season as Arsenault helped lock down their attack at the top of the 12-meter arc and prevent them entry into set plays.
Â
No. 2 Boston College (16-0, 6-0 ACC) closes out the 2018 regular season this Thursday, May 19, when the team hosts No. 16 Syracuse at 5 p.m. at the Newton Campus Fields. The game will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra, which is available at WatchESPN.com and on the ESPN app.
