Junior captain Casey Fitzgerald became Boston College's seventh Best Defensive Defenseman in Hockey East while Logan Hutsko became BC's 37th freshman to make the Hockey East All-Rookie Team
WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Two Boston College hockey players, including junior captain Casey Fitzgerald and freshman forward Logan Hutsko, were honored in Hockey East's annual postseason awards on Wednesday morning.
The Hockey East First Team, Second Team, Third Team and Honorable Mention All-Stars will be released later this afternoon at 2 p.m. while the Hockey East Player of the Year, Coach of the Year and Rookie of the Year will be unveiled on Thursday evening at the league's postseason banquet held at the Royal Sonesta in Cambridge.
Fitzgerald was heralded as the Hockey East's Best Defensive Defenseman. The North Andover, Mass. native becomes the seventh Eagle since 2000 to earn the award as well as the eighth time the Boston College program has been bestowed with the honor.
The Eagles' third-year defenseman leads Boston College in blocked shots (39) in addition to shots on goal (100) as BC heads into the Hockey East semifinals.
Fitzgerald has recorded 19 points on the season, scoring six goals and logging 13 assists as BC's captain is tied for 13th in scoring amongst all defensemen in the conference. He also leads Boston College in power play assists this season, doling out seven helpers with the man advantage.
The rearguard veteran is Boston College's most experienced skater, leading the Eagles in both career points scored (11-53-68) and games played (111).
Hutsko becomes Boston College's 37th first-year player to be named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team.
The Tampa, Fla. native leads Hockey East in points scored amongst rookies with 31 (12-19-31) and points per game (0.86) and ranks sixth, nationally, amongst all freshmen players. Amongst all of the NCAA, Hutsko is tied for 84th in points scored. With the conference, Hutsko is tied for eighth with Boston University's Bobo Carpenter and Providence's Brian Pinho with 0.86 points per game.
Hutsko was tabbed the Hockey East Rookie of the Month in February after he led all NCAA rookies with 13 points on seven goals and six assists.
BC's dynamic winger is the first Eagle to crack the 30-point plateau (12-19-31) this season and leads the Eagles in multi-point games this season with eight. He is tied for the team in lead in goals scored (12) and has doled out the most assists for the maroon and gold with 19.
Back in early February, Hutsko became the first Eagle to account for five goals in two games since Nathan Gerbe turned the trick 10 years ago during the 2007-08 season. Hutsko scored the game-tying goal and overtime winner against UMass Lowell on Feb. 9 and followed that performance with a natural hat trick against Harvard in the Beanpot consolation on Feb. 12, all occurring in the third period, in a span of 11 minutes and 23 seconds, including an even strength goal, power play goal and extra attacker goal. That hat trick is BC's only of the season.
