Third-period snipe gives Eagles breathing room in Beanpot semis
After the Boston College women's hockey team saw a 2-0 lead go by the wayside in the second period, taking a 3-2 advantage into the third period of their Beanpot semifinal versus a relentless Northeastern team provided some tension.
That's when junior captain Makenna Newkirk stepped in and found the proper angle to create enough space for the Eagles to skate away with a 5-2 win over their crosstown rivals on Tuesday night at Conte Forum.
"I thought it was a good hockey game," head coach Katie Crowley said. "I thought we came out with a little spunk and spark. They took it to us pretty good in that second period. I like the way our team handled that and found a way to come back and win."
"In the second period we started to make mistakes and they capitalized on those mistakes," said freshman Daryl Watts, who struck for two goals in the first period to give the Eagles an early 2-0 advantage. "Luckily, Makenna and some of the other upperclassman stepped up to get the win for us."
With a little over five minutes remaining in regulation, Kenzie Kent sent a nifty backwards pass from behind the Huskies net into the slot.
Newkirk picked it up, cut between two black and red jerseys, and at a tough angle from the right circle sniped a tight shot into the top right corner of the net, somehow finding the small sliver of space between the corner of red steel and Northeastern goalie Brittany Bugalski's left shoulder.
"We just really focused on trusting the system," said Newkirk, who scored the Eagles' final three goals of the game. "Our forecheck is crucial. When we have Maegan (Beres) forechecking hard, being a great F1, it's really easy for Kenzie and I to read her. I think a lot of credit goes to her, and Kenzie's a great playmaker. So, all the credit goes to them. Our defense was amazing back there, just delivering us with great passes."
It was Beres who ignited a 2-on-1 break for Kent and Newkirk in the second period that provided the Eagles with a 3-2 lead that would hold up.
Newkirk would cap off her second career hat trick with a shorthanded empty netter from the red line, sending the Eagles to their sixth consecutive Beanpot final.
"We just stuck to our systems, trust each other, played for each other," Newkirk said. "It's a tough game. Coming off that second period we just wanted to pick it up … we trust the process and it paid off for us."
"Overall, a great team effort," said Crowley. "We got ourselves in a final, so that's always something to be proud of. We've given ourselves another chance to win a trophy."
The Eagles (25-2-3, 17-1-3 HEA) will host New Hampshire at 2 p.m. on Friday, before making a run at their third-straight Beanpot title with a 7:30 p.m. faceoff scheduled for Tuesday versus Boston University in the final.
"It's huge for our team," Newkirk said of Tuesday night's win. It's the first trophy of the season. We're just trying to gear up now for UNH on Friday, but then it's easy to get up on Tuesday. We need to take care of Friday first, and then move on."
