Eagles Push #23 Notre Dame to Limit in Close Loss
February 04, 2018 | Men's Tennis
Men's tennis captured a win over St. Francis College Saturday afternoon
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College men's tennis team competed in three matches over the course of the weekend, hosting No. 23 Notre Dame and St. Francis Brooklyn College on Saturday before a neutral court match against University of South Florida in Cambridge on Sunday.
Â
After a close 4-3 loss to Notre Dame, the Eagles rallied hard and downed St. Francis in a 6-1 decision to split the day.
"I am proud of the guys and we fought hard like always," said head coach Scott Wilkins. "We were up 3-2 in matches and our last two matches on were both up a set and 3-1 and 3-0, respectively. We put ourselves in a position to win against the #23 team in the country and I give Notre Dame much credit for earning such a hard fought win. Gary and Markus played well in their first ACC match representing BC and Chieffalo gave it everything he had and I am encouraged by that."
Â
On Sunday, USF clinched the doubles point before ultimately clinching the match. The No. 3 and No. 6 positions did not finish play after the match was clinched.Â
"Even though we lost 4-1 that match was a 4-3 type feel against a great team that has been ranked in the top 25 the last three years by the ITA in the final collegiate rankings," said Wilkins. "We had the doubles point on our racquet up 5-3 in the deciding doubles match while two of the remaining matches were both in the third set when the match was stopped at clinch. Kent Mukai showed his leadership skills and locked in 'Mukai style'Â for a victory and Max Palmer looked great in the doubles with a little help from wily veteran Gary, of course. Overall it was a good weekend and we are looking forward to when it all comes together for us."
Â
Up next, the Eagles will return to action Feb. 16 to host Southern New Hampshire University at 4 p.m.Â
