Eagles’ goaltender posts league-best marks as BC moved into the HEA Semifinals
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College senior goaltender Katie Burt was recognized as Hockey East's Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after a standout weekend backing the Eagles to a sweep of Vermont in the conference tournament's quarterfinal round.
For the second-straight week, Burt was honored as the league's top defensive player. This is her fourth Hockey East weekly honor of the season after earning two Warrior Player of the Week awards earlier this season. Overall, this is her 18th weekly award from the league in her career. She was also the back-to-back Hockey East Goaltender of the Month in December and January.
In last weekend's two-game sweep of Vermont in the best-of-three Hockey East Quarterfinal series, Burt led all conference goaltenders with a perfect 2-0-0 record, a .968 save percentage and a 1.00 goals against average.
On Friday in BC's 3-1 win over the Catamounts, Burt stopped 35-of-36 shots she faced. She followed that up on Saturday with 25 saves on 26 shots in the Eagles' 6-1 win at Kelley Rink.
Burt enters the Hockey East semifinal leading the nation in games played (36), minutes played (2186:09), saves (978), shots faced (1,046) and tied for the national lead in victories (30). Her 1.92 goals against average ranks 12th in the country among D1 goaltenders, while her .933 save percentage is eighth-best among D1 goalies.
Top-seeded and third-ranked Boston College (30-3-3) returns to the ice on Saturday, March 3, when the team meets seventh-seeded Connecticut (15-13-9) in the Hockey East semifinals. The conference's championship weekend will be played at Northeastern's Matthews Arena, and the BC-UConn game will face off at 1:30 p.m., followed by the third-seeded Maine (19-13-5) vs. fourth-seeded Northeastern (17-16-3) semifinal at 4:30 p.m. Both games will be televised by NESNPlus, with the Eagles' game tape-delayed until 10 p.m. on Saturday night. The second semifinal will be televised live. Tickets for the whole weekend are available at gonu.com.
