February 16, 2018 | Men's Hockey
The No. 19 Eagles look to build off their momentum from a big win at UMass on Thursday as Boston College needs four points to claim its 16th regular season title
BOSTON COLLEGE vs. MAINE
Maine is the last Hockey East opponent left on the Eagles' schedule as Boston College has not squared off against the Black Bears in almost a year and a half. Last season, BC took on Maine at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland as Austin Cangelosi powered the Eagles to a 6-1 victory thanks to a hat trick. on Nov. 4, 2016. Boston College followed that up by ending a lengthy winless stretch in Orono with a 3-2 win at Alfond Arena on Nov. 5, 2016. It marked BC's first win in northern Maine since Nov. 2, 2012. The Eagles are on a nice little four-game winning streak against Maine but it has not always come easy against the Black Bears. Prior to this four-game winning streak over Maine, the Black Bears owned a 7-5 mark against Boston College. Saturday's tilt marks the 122nd contest of the series as Boston College owns a 66-46-9 record overall. Head coach Jerry York is 8-2 against Maine's Red Gendron, who is in his fifth season at the helm of the Black Bears.
BLACK BEAR BREAKDOWN
Now that a majority of the season has unfolded, it's safe to say Maine jumped off the page a bit this year and responded nicely from a disappointing 2016-17 campaign. The Black Bears are right in the thick of things, tied for fourth in the Hockey East standings with a 10-8-3 conference record and a 16-11-4 mark, overall. Last season, Maine finished with an 11-21-4 mark with a 5-15-2 win-loss total in conference play. As is usually the case against Maine, it has invovled itself in some tight games this season, including this most recent stretch. The Black Bears have gone to overtime in their last four-consecutive outings, winning two and losing two. Six of Maine's last eight games have gone to overtime and the Black Bears have played in nine ovetime games overall this season, going 3-2-4 in those decisions. Sophomore Mitchell Fossier leads Maine in scoring with 0.93 points per game, including 11 goals and 17 assists through 30 games. Classmate Chase Pearson is one point behind and leads his club with 20 assists, which is tied for 40th nationally. Second-year defenseman Patrick Holway is 40th in the nation amongst all blue liners in scoring with 0.64 points per game (6-12-18). Maine has had no trouble finding the back of the net as the Black Bears rank 10th overall in college hockey in scoring (3.26 gpg) which the defense is slotted in 32nd, surrendering 2.97 goals per game. Maine is the most penalized team in Hockey East, seventh nationally, averaging 15.0 PIMs per game.
