
Finns Force BC into HEA Quarters with 5-2 Win at UMass

Twin brothers Jesper and Julius Mattila scored three goals 3:40 seconds apart to bypass the first round of the Hockey East Tournament into the quarters on Thursday in Amherst
AMHERST, Mass. – No. 19 Boston College responded to a 2-1 deficit midway through the second period by tacking up four goals in the third to skate past Massachusetts for the eight-straight time and clinch a home spot in the Hockey East quarterfinals on Thursday night at the Mullins Center.
With the win in Amherst, Boston College can finish no lower than fourth place and will host a quarterfinal round at Kelley Rink from March 9-11. If BC were to get four of its remaining six possible points, the Eagles would clinch their 16th regular season title outright.
Sophomore Jesper Mattila scored the game-winning goal at 14:08 of the third period while twin brother, Julius Mattila, put the game out of reach with two more goals after that to seal the 5-2 victory.
Sophomore David Cotton accounted for his fourth power play goal of the season to tie the contest at with 12:38 to play in regulation while first-year forwared Jacob Tortora scored his sixth of the season early in the first period.
Second-year backstopper Joseph Woll upped his record to 12-10-2 after steering away 28-of-30 Massachusetts attempts.

After the three-point showing, Mattila is now tied for the team lead in points (10-14-24) with Logan Hutsko. The Tampere, Finland native became the Eagles' third goal scorer to reach double digits this season.
- Second-year defenseman Jesper Mattila scored his first-career game-winning goal by doing so in transition with 6:52 left in the third period. The Tampere, Finland native scored his fourth goal of the season and first since doing so against UMass at home on Jan. 23. Mattila's tally attained BC's first lead of the night.
- David Cotton scored his fourth power play goal of the season and accounted for his sixth multi-point performance of the year with the help on Julius Mattila's empty net goal. The Parker, Texas native is second on the team in scoring (8-15-23) and is now tied with Graham McPhee for most power play goals on the team (4).
- Freshman Jacob Tortora scored his sixth goal of the season and set up Jesper Mattila with the game-winning goal to notch his second multi-point performance of the season. The Victor, N.Y. native was a healthy scratch in Monday's Beanpot consolation as the first-year forward returned to the lineup to score his first goal since the UMass Lowell game on Jan. 27.
- Freshman Logan Hutsko continues to produce, notching another two points with a pair of assists in Thursday's win. The Tampa, Fla. native now has seven points in his last three outings (5-2-7) and is now tied with Julius Mattila for the team lead in points (10-14-24). Hutsko's two helpers marks his fifth multi-point outing of the season.
- Captain Michael Kim provided the primary assist on Tortora's tally early in the first period and followed that with another helped on Julius Mattila's first goal of the game. It marks the junior captain's third multi-point performance of the season as he now has nine assists on the season, upping his point total to 14 (5-9-13) through 31 games. It also marks the second time the veteran defenseman has assisted in back-to-back games this season.
- Sophomore Connor Moore accounted for his second assist in three games on Tortora's goal and increases his scoring totals to 13 points (3-10-13) as well in 31 outings.

• Massachusetts started off things early, taking the quick lead 36 into the contest. Cale Makar got the puck into BC's end from the neutral zone and Oliver Chau settled it in the corner. Jake Gaudet crashed in from the top of the zone, accepted Chau's dish and handcuffed Joseph Woll with a snap shot in tight to claim a quick 1-0 lead.
SECOND GOAL (1-1 – Boston College) - FIRST PERIOD – Jacob Tortora – 4:37 – EVEN STRENGTH
• Immediately after UMass's quick strike, Boston College did not let the Minutemen capitalize off that momentum and kept in in the Minutemen's zone for an extended period of time. It came to a head after Jacob Tortora scored his sixth goal of the season, roofing a rebound from JD Dudek. Connor Moore quarterbacked the play by sliding the puck from the top right side of the zone to Dudek for the one-timer blast at UMass netminder Matt Murray. The original save was made, but the momentum of Dudek's blast kicked over to the near post where Tortora was able to scoop the puck up and roof it top shelf at 4:37 to tie it up, 1-1.
THIRD GOAL (2-1 – Massachusetts) - SECOND PERIOD – George Mika – 11:57 – EVEN STRENGTH
• Massachusetts reclaimed its one-goal lead midway through the second period on a backhander in tight by George Mika. John Leonard kept the Minutemen cycle alive atop their zone and took his shot at Woll from the circle. Woll made the initial stop but Mika was in position to gather the rebound with no one around. Mika walked it to the goalmouth and beat Woll with the backhander at 11:57 to make it a 2-1 score.
FOUTH GOAL (2-2 – Boston College) - THIRD PERIOD – David Cotton – 7:22 – POWER PLAY
• The Eagles found the back of the net on their fifth power play chance of the night on an extended window after Griff Jeszka was assessed a five-minute major for contact to the head at 4:20 of the third period. In the third minute of the extended power play, Julius Mattila got the puck from behind the net to Logan Hutsko on far side. David Cotton slipped between the circles and popped Hutsko's feed past Murray at 7:22 to tie things up on the power play, 2-2.

• Boston College took its first lead in transition as the Eagles flew down the sheet catching UMass down numbers. Tortora gathered a loose puck in Boston College's end and charged down the right side of the sheet. Tortora dropped it off to Jesper Mattila just before entering the zone and Mattila rifled a low wrister past Murray to give BC its first lead of the night at 14:08 of the third, 4-2.

• Forty seconds after Jesper's goal, Julius Mattila scored his first of two goals thanks to a beautiful feed from Hutsko through the zone. Michael Kim generated the scoring play with a pass to Hutsko on the far side in the neutral zone. Julius Mattila split a pair of UMass defensemen and called for the puck and Hutsko slipped the disc through three Minutemen sticks as Mattila corralled it and gained the zone. Mattila powered through and snapped it low past Murray with the wrister to extend the Eagle advantage, 4-2.
SEVENTH GOAL (5-2 – Boston College) - THIRD PERIOD – Julius Mattila – 17:48 – EVEN STRENGTH
• Julius Mattila iced the game with 2:12 left on the clock as UMass pulled Murray for the extra attacker. Ron Greco broke up the Minutemen cycle down low and scooted the puck out to Cotton in the flats. Mattila swung down the left side, took Cotton's feed and brush the puck into the empty net to ice the 5-2 victory at 17:48.

Boston College takes its last road trip of the regular season when the Eagles head to Orono, Maine for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop against the Black Bears on Saturday, Feb. 17. Saturday's game at Alfond Arena marks the first of three-consecutive contests against Maine as the Black Bears come back down to The Heights next weekend on Friday and Saturday, March 23-24, to close out the regular season.
