Trio Earns Hockey East Monthly Honors

Newirk, Watts and Burt all honored by Hockey East for their play in January
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Three Boston College women's hockey players earned Hockey East monthly honors for January on Thursday as the league recognized the trio for their stellar play during the last month.
Junior Makenna Newkirk was the Warrior Player of the Month, sharing the honor with Boston University's Victoria Bach. Freshman Daryl Watts was tabbed Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Month, while senior goaltender Katie Burt was honored as the Goaltender of the Month. The trip helped the No. 3 Eagles go 9-1-0 in January.
Newkirk claimed HEA Player of the Month honors for January for the second-straight year. In 10 games this year, she tied for the national lead in points with 22, matching Watts' total, and also led all players in the country in assists (16). Newkirk netted three game-winning goals in January while posting points in eight-of-10 games, including six multiple-point efforts. Newkirk also recorded a .646 faceoff winning percentage with 135 draw wins – most in the country – while her 17 blocked shots were the most among Hockey East forwards in January.
On Jan. 2 at Merrimack, Newkirk posted a four-point day (two goals, two assists), and followed that up with a career-best five-point day (one goal, four assists) against New Hampshire on Jan. 5. She added a one-goal, one-assist effort against Northeastern on Jan. 12, before registering four assists on the road against the Huskies the following day on Jan. 13 in a 5-4 overtime win. In that game, she also created an offensive-zone turnover and resulting assist on Toni Ann Miano's game-winning goal. On Jan. 16 against Harvard, she posted a three-point effort (one goal, two assists) that included the game-winning goal, before adding a two-point day in the 5-0 win over No. 10 Providence on Jan. 26.
Overall, this is Newkirk's third career Hockey East monthly honor, and her second player of the month award.
With her January rookie award, Watts earned her fourth monthly honor from Hockey East this year, and her third monthly rookie honor. She tied Newkirk for the national scoring lead in January, also posting 22 points from a nations-best 12 goals and 10 assists. She also led the nation with five power-play assists and three shorthanded goals. Watts posted points in nine-of-10 games in January, including seven multiple-point efforts. At the end of the month, Watts pushed her Hockey East conference point total to 50 points with three games to play, posting just the third 50-point season in league history.
She opened the month with back-to-back five-point days at Merrimack on Jan. 2 and against New Hampshire on Jan. 5. Against the Warriors, she netted two goals and added three assists and followed that with a career-high four goals (including two shorthanded goals) and one assist against the Wildcats. Watts added one goal and one assist at New Hampshire on Jan. 6, before assisting on both BC goals against Northeastern on Nov. 12. The following day, she tallied the game-tying goal and also added an assist in the overtime victory at NU. After a two-point day against Harvard, Watts then closed the month with three goals in two games against No. 10 Providence to help the Eagles cap the sweep. She netted the game-winning goal in both contests, and in the road game on Jan. 27, she netted a shorthanded goal and the game-winning power-play goal with under four minutes to play.
Burt was tabbed the conference's Goaltender of the Month for the second-straight month after also earning the award in December. In January, Burt set the NCAA career wins record (115 victories), and also set a new Hockey East mark for minutes played in league games, where she's currently stands at 4702:14 with three conference games remaining in her career. In January, Burt led the nation in games in goal (10), minutes (600.58), wins (9) and saves (269), and her 1.90 goals against average and a .934 save percentage both ranked second in Hockey East. Burt's two shutouts ranked first in the league. She went 9-1-1 in January, and recorded 30 or more saves in two games and 25 or more saves in seven games.
On Jan. 5, Burt made 33 saves in the 5-0 shutout of New Hampshire, before making 28 stops the next day in a 5-1 win against the Wildcats on the road. She also stopped 36 shots from Harvard in the 6-2 win on Jan. 16. After her 24-save effort in the 2-1 come-from-behind win over Vermont on Jan. 20, Burt closed the month with a 25-save shutout of No. 10 Providence on Jan. 26, before stopping 29 shots at PC on Jan. 27 in the 3-2 win.
This is the ninth Hockey East Goaltender of the Month honor in Burt's career, and the 10th conference monthly honor she's received overall.
Boston College has now earned eight monthly honors – and 13 weekly honors – from Hockey East during the 2017-18 season.
The third-ranked Boston College women's hockey team returns to the ice next on Tuesday, Feb. 6, when the Eagles host Northeastern in the first round of the 40th Women's Beanpot at Kelley Rink. Faceoff for the BC-NU game is set for 8 p.m., while Boston University and Harvard will meet in the first game at 5 p.m. All games of the 2018 Women's Beanpot will be played at the Eagles' Kelley Rink.
