Eagles Return to Power for Louisville Rematch

BC looks to topple Cardinals in home match
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team returns to Power Gym on Friday night, taking on Louisville just two weeks after falling to the then-No. 22 Cardinals, 3-1, on the road. The Eagles opened the match on Oct. 26 on top, closing out a 25-18 first-set win, but fell 20-25, 17-25, 23-25 in the final three frames.
"We played pretty well against these guys the first time we played them," head coach Jason Kennedy said. "We were a deuce set away from pushing it to a fifth set over at their place. We attacked well and seemed to be in rhythm but had trouble closing out sets. They're a good team with strong leaders so we need to be better prepared to take advantage of opportunities if we get them late in sets."
The last time the Eagles met the Cardinals, BC was starting a string of four road matches in two weeks. This time around, BC will have five days between its last match and welcoming Louisville to the Heights and then an entire week to prepare for another home match on Nov. 16 against Virginia Tech. As the season winds down, the Eagles are taking advantage of the long breaks to recuperate and really dig into the details of the upcoming matchup.
"Even though we have extra time to prepare, we really took an extra rest day to help recover a little bit," Kennedy explained. "Being on the road the last two weeks has been tough so we needed to take an extra little bit to recover. Now that we've ramped things back up, we can scheme things a little differently since we don't have a second team to worry about this week. It gives us a chance to see how focused and detail oriented we can be with our execution."
For the rest of the season, BC will play teams they've already seen earlier in the year. Louisville, Virginia Tech and Virginia will all make their way to Power Gym this month before Boston College closes out the regular season with a trip to Clemson, a team the Eagles bested 3-0 at home on Sept. 21. That knowledge of their opponent, paired with the extra preparation and home-court advantage, bodes well for the Eagles as they finish out the year.
"I don't think we served as tough as we could, part of that certainly comes from being on the road," Kennedy said of the last matchup with the Cards. "If we can serve them a little tougher hopefully we can take them out of system a bit more this time around.
"One of our biggest strengths at home has been serving. We need to be able to get the velocity back from the service line that we really didn't have when we played all three of these teams on the road. It'll be great to be back in Power. Hopefully we'll be able to get a good crowd in there for these last three down the stretch and close out the year on a bit of a streak at home."
Friday's match will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Power Gym.
Due to the 7 p.m. men's hockey game taking place on Kelley Rink in Conte Forum, fans attending volleyball are encouraged to enter through Gate C near the Power Gym entrance.
