Eagles First Challenge at Rhode Island on Thursday
November 07, 2018 | Women's Basketball
Eagles at URI on Thursday at 7
Â
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The wait is over. The new era under the guidance of new women's basketball Head Coach Joanna Bernabei-McNamee will start on the road at Rhode Island on Thursday night (7 p.m.).
Â
Coach Mac has used her time since arriving in April to get all 12 players, five returners and seven freshmen, all on the same page.
Â
The Eagles have no seniors on the roster but return three juniors in forward Emma Guy, forward Georgia Pineau and off-guard Taylor Ortlepp.Â
Â
Guy played just 16 games as she was hindered with injury and the flu all season. She averaged 8.9 points and 7.0 rebounds a game. She also had four double-doubles in those 16 games, including a career-high 15 boards vs. Miami.
Â
Pineau was the third-leading scorer (11.6 ppg.) and led the team on the boards (7.2 rpg.). She was also second on the team in assists with a career-high 77. Ortlepp led BC in scoring (12.3 ppg.), was third in assists (66) and second in three-pointers with a career-high 65.
Â
Sophomore Sydney Lowery also returns. She played in 28 games and started 10 games. She averaged six points and three rebounds a game.
Â
The seven freshmen are still learning and will need time to catch up to the speed of the game. Three of the newbies are from Virginia – point guard Makayla Dickens, shooting guard Kate Klimkiewicz and center Clara Ford. Two local products on the roster include guard Marnelle Garraud from Lynn and forward Taylor Soule from New Hampshire. Guard Jenasae Bishop and the teams third Aussie Lana Hollingsworth rounds out the rookie class.
Â
Thursday's game against Rhode Island will prove to be a test for the young Eagles but they will have to adjust quickly as BC hosts St. Peter's on Sunday at 4 p.m.
Â
BC will also hold the annual Field Trip Day against Holy Cross on Thursday, Nov. 15. The game is free to attend for all students K-through-8 and their chaperones. If you are a teacher interested in bringing your class or school, please contact Drew Read at readan@bc.edu or 617-552-0787.
Â
Tickets for the 2018-19 women's basketball season are on sale now. For more information, visit bceagles.com/tickets, or call 617-552-GoBC (4622).
