Naughton and Strawberry lead offense in road loss
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Boston College volleyball team fell in three sets at Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 20-25, 18-25, 21-25 contest in Cassell Coliseum.
The Eagles (13-13, 3-11 ACC) hit at .173 percent (38 kills – 20 errors – 104 total attempts) and out dug the Hokies 45-40, but Virginia Tech (14-12, 5-9 ACC) bested the Eagles in blocks 10-4 and hit at a .302 clip (43 – 11 – 106).
Sophomore Clare Naughton and freshman Jewel Strawberry shared the team lead with eight kills each while junior Jane DeJarld had a team-high 24 assists.
Junior Jill Strockis led BC with 13 digs and notched two of the Eagles' three service aces. Sophomore Ally Mullen tallied four total blocks to lead the Eagles.

BC HIGHLIGHTS
- The Eagles' best hitting came in the third set, as the Eagles committed just three errors and hit 12 kills on 30 attempts for a .300 clip.
- Junior Jill Strockis now leads the Eagles with 20 service aces after recording two against the Hokies. Sophomore Clare Naughton tallied the Eagles' other ace for the first point of the match.
- Virginia Tech's .302 attack percentage was the fourth-highest recorded against the Eagles this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – The teams went point-for-point to open the match, tied through 6-6 until BC won two-straight to lead, 8-6. Virginia Tech went 6-1 to lead 12-9, keeping a narrow 15-13 advantage at the media timeout. The Hokies hit a 4-1 surge, leading 19-14 after back-to-back BC errors cause the Eagles to call a timeout. Virginia Tech went 3-1 out of the break, leading 22-15, before Boston College stole four-straight to send the Hokies to their bench with a three-point lead (22-19). Virginia Tech closed out the set on a 3-1 run, winning 25-20.
Set 2 – The Hokies jumped to a 7-1 lead in the second, but the Eagles battled back within three points, 12-9, on an 8-5 run. Virginia Tech responded with a 4-1 run to pull back ahead 16-10, a six-point lead that would hold as the teams went 4-4 over the next eight points. BC called a timeout at the 20-14 Hokies' lead, but Virginia Tech edged the Eagles 5-4 to win the second frame, 25-18.
Set 3 – The Eagles came back from an eight-point deficit (14-6) to trail just 22-19 late in the set, but fell 25-21 in the final frame. Virginia Tech opened up a 4-1 lead on the Eagles, widening the gap to 9-4 on a 5-3 run that forced an Eagles' timeout. Four unanswered points for the Hokies drew another BC regroup at 13-4. Out of the break, the Eagles went 7-3 to cut the Hokies' lead to five (16-11) before the teams split the next ten points evenly for a 21-16 Virginia Tech lead. The Eagles went 3-1, trailing 22-19 and forcing a Virginia Tech timeout, but the rally came too late as the Hokies won three of five points to close out the set and match.
