No. 5 Northeastern Tops No. 4 BC in OT Thriller, 5-4
November 27, 2018 | Women's Hockey
Makenna Newkirk scored twice in the 5-4 Hockey East battle at Matthews Arena.
BOSTON – Makenna Newkirk scored two goals in the third period but it wouldn't be enough as No. 5 Northeastern claimed a 5-4 overtime win over the No. 4 Boston College women's hockey team on Tuesday night at Matthews Arena.
After an even opening five minutes, the Eagles broke the deadlock when Savannah Norcross potted her third goal of the season. A nice glove save from Maddy McArthur on an Alina Mueller shot with six minutes to play in the frame preserved the lead – and Daryl Watts' ninth goal of the year with 1:42 remaining had BC up 2-0 heading into the break.
Northeastern cut it back to a one-goal game when Mueller converted on a power play early in the second. It would be the first of three goals in the frame, and another goal from Mueller and then one from Kasidy Anderson gave the hosts a 3-2 lead after two.
Two goals from Newkirk by the midway point of the final frame had BC up 4-3 entering the final few minutes. With Frankel on the bench, the clock ticked under 90 seconds to play and the Huskies tied it up to force overtime. Mia Brown scored the game-winning goal at the 2:40 mark of overtime.
BC held the final edge in shots on goal (50-28) and went 2-for-3 on the power play while Northeastern was 1-for-5. Aerin Frankel finished with 46 saves for the Huskies and McArthur had 28 for BC.
