Eagles Find Redemption Over Hokies on Senior Night

The volleyball team found their first win in five matches with a 3-2 final score
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team broke their losing streak in an impressively contested match with conference opponent Virginia Tech, 3-2, Friday night in Power Gym on Senior Night.
The Eagles (14-14, 4-12 ACC) hit at a .280 clip (67 kills – 18 errors – 175 total attempts) over the five-set match while both teams recorded 11 team blocks. The Hokies (14-14, 5-11 ACC) held a .179 attack percentage (67 kills – 34 errors – 184 total attempts) as the Eagles found revenge from their 3-0 loss to Virginia Tech earlier in November. Despite a hard-fought two-set rally from the Hokies, the Eagles took the final set and secured their first win since October 21.
Clare Naughton led the Eagles with a double-double, finding 13 kills and 13 digs. McKenna Goss held the team-high 19 kills while Jane DeJarld recorded 35 assists.

- Clare Naughton recorded a double-double off of 13 kills and 13 digs while McKenna Goss made a standout effort on her Senior Night, recording a team-high 19 kills.
- Jane DeJarld recorded a team-high 35 assists for BC while Camille Oemcke tallied 15.

- BC's 72 digs matched their third-highest of the season. The last time the Eagles recorded 72 digs was in the win over Southern Utah.
- The Eagles' 67 kills is their most this season. Their closest was tallied in the loss at Wake Forest, where they earned 61 kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – The Eagles earned the first point of the match, but the remainder of the first set was very well-contested on both sides. The score was tied 16 times and the leading team changed 10 times over the first set. Following a VT time out with the score 24-20 BC, the Eagles allowed just one point on a kill by Ester Talamazzi before Amaka Chukwujekwu recorded the final point of the set and secured the 1-0 lead for the home team.
Set 2 – The Eagles recorded 11 points before allowing one in the second frame. The first VT point of the second set came from a service error, but the Eagles continued with their momentum as McKenna Goss notched seven kills and led BC to an impressive 25-12 set for a 2-0 lead.
Set 3 – The Hokies rallied back, forcing 19 ties and nine lead-changes over the third set. Clare Naughton had seven kills for BC in the third set while the Hokies had three different players record five each – Kaity Smith, Jaila Tolbert and Ester Talamazzi. The decision was set from a ball handling error as Virginia Tech took the third.
Set 4 – Building on their momentum, Virginia Tech started the fourth with two points before allowing a kill by Sophie West. Following a BC time out Ester Talamazzi earned another deciding point to tie the match.
Set 5 – Two straight kills from McKenna Goss set the tone for the Eagles to begin the fifth set. The Eagles and Hokies found seven ties in the fifth set, but four kills from McKenna Goss held BC strong. As a VT attack error was the finalizing point, Boston College found redemption over the Hokies.
