Boston College and Under Armour honor school legend with “Era of Doug Flutie” specialty uniform
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College will wear special throwback uniforms Saturday on Homecoming against Louisville. The uniforms go back to 1984 with Heisman Trophy winner and United Press International Player of the Year Doug Flutie. The renowned football player is widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes in program history and symbolizes a time of excitement, spirit and success for Boston College.
In honor of Flutie's legacy and the enthusiasm he brought to campus, BC will wear a throwback design in their game against Louisville on October 13. The specialty uniform will feature design elements unique to the BC uniforms of the early 1980's.
The "Era of Doug Flutie," as some call it, is best remembered by the "Hail-Flutie" pass in 1984, now a staple in college football highlight reels. Doug Flutie's unforgettable pass came at the end of a high scoring Boston College game against the Miami Hurricanes. With six seconds on the clock and Miami up by four points, Doug Flutie made history by hurling a perfect 60+ yard bomb to the end zone into the waiting arms of Gerard Phelan, securing a touchdown and an epic 47-45 win for his team. Boston College ended the year with one of their most successful seasons of all time, led by their newly minted Heisman winner as the face of the team.
This is not the first time the school has honored Flutie with a throwback uniform. In 2015, Boston College showcased a Flutie away jersey for a Shamrock Series game they played against Notre Dame at Fenway Park. The new 2018 throwback jerseys, on the other hand, are home uniforms to be proudly displayed at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill.
When designing these uniforms, Under Armour set out to authentically recreate the uniforms worn during 1981-1984; from the font on the back of the jerseys, to the number style, to the stripes on the jersey sleeves. Staying true to the colors used on the uniforms at that time, the throwback uniforms feature a deeper gold hue than the current gold used today.
Since the Flutie era, though, there have been many advancements in uniform design and technology, and the 2018 variation has been given quite an upgrade to reflect these developments. In 1984, the players wore loose, mesh half shirts with oversized shoulder pads, while the new uniforms are tailored and incorporate Under Armour's unique ArmourGrid technology for an added advantage.
