Cavaliers Top Eagles in Five

BC came from behind twice but fell, 3-2
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Boston College volleyball team fell in another close five-set match, dropping a 3-2 decision to Virginia on Friday night in Memorial Gym.
The Eagles (12-5, 2-3 ACC) hit .157 percent ( 58 kills – 30 errors – 178 total attempts) and aced the Cavaliers six times, but Virginia (5-10, 1-4 ACC) hit at a .272 rate (70 kills – 24 errors – 169 total attempts) while out blocking the Eagles 19-8.
Sophomore Clare Naughton hit her first career double-double in the loss, leading the team with 16 kills and tallying a career-high 14 digs. Fellow sophomore Madison McKnight had a team-high 22 assists while junior Jane DeJarld recorded 21.
Junior Jill Strockis led the Eagles with 19 digs while Makenzie Morrison followed with 16. Sophomore Ally Mullen's five blocks led the team.

- Clare Naughton recorded her first career double-double with 16 kills and 14 digs. Cat Balido was close behind with 13 kills while Jewel Strawberry and McKenna Goss each hit seven kills.
- Five Eagles recorded two-or-more blocks in the loss. Ally Mullen led with five while Naughton, Amaka Chukwujekwu and Balido each had three and McKenna Goss recorded two.
HOW IT HAPPANED
Set 1 – BC jumped out to a quick lead, doubling up on the Cavaliers 8-4. The Eagles edged Virginia 5-4 over the next nine points, forcing Virginia to use a timeout with a 13-8 BC advantage. The Cavaliers went 4-2 out of the break, closing in to trail just 14-12 at the BC timeout, but BC kept Virginia at arm's length as the teams went an even 6-6 over the next 12 points (20-18 BC). Virginia hit a 4-2 surge to tie the set at 22 all, taking the lead 24-23 at the BC timeout before a service ace sealed the 25-23 Virginia win.
Set 2 – A Cavaliers' error and three straight kills gave BC a 4-1 lead in the second before a 4-0 run from Virginia put the Cavaliers ahead, 5-4. The Eagles came back with a 4-0 run of their own, leading 8-5. The teams went point-for-point over the next eight before a Virginia attack error gave BC a 14-8 lead and drew a Cavaliers' timeout. Three in a row for Virginia cut the BC advantage to 14-11 before the Cavaliers took five of the next nine to force an Eagles regroup at 19-17 Boston College. BC went 2-1 out of the timeout, leading 21-18 and forcing the Cavaliers into a break of their own. Virginia went 4-1, evening the score at 22-22, but the Eagles closed out the set, 25-23, on a 2-1 run.
Set 3 – Boston College errors, combined with precision hitting from Virginia, gave the Cavaliers a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-17 third-set victory. Virginia ran out to an 8-2 lead before the teams went point-for-point over the next four with Virginia leading 10-4. A 5-2 surge gave the Cavaliers a 15-6 advantage which Virginia later extended to a 10-point lead at 18-8. The Eagles went five-of-eight to cut the lead to 21-13, but the gap was too great and Virginia took the win despite splitting the final eight points, 4-4.
Set 4 – The teams began by trading points, tied 4-4 until Virginia took two-straight to lead 6-4. The teams split the next 10 evenly with Virginia holding an 11-9 advantage before BC went on a 4-1 tear to lead 13-12. A 3-1 surge for Virginia helped the Cavaliers come back to lead, 16-14, but BC took the next three to regain the 17-16 advantage and force a Cavaliers' timeout. Virginia edged BC 5-4, drawing even at 21 apiece, but the Eagles went 3-1 for set point at 24-22. After a Virginia timeout, BC served up an ace to win the set, 25-22, and force a deciding frame.
Set 5 – The Eagles ran to a 3-1 lead, later extending the advantage to 7-3 and drawing a Virginia timeout. At the switch BC led 8-4, but the Cavaliers came back with three unanswered scores to trail just 8-7. The Eagles took four of the next seven, forcing a timeout at 12-10 Boston College. Virginia went 3-1 out of the break, knotting the set up at 13-13 and driving BC to the bench. BC won the first point out of the regroup but Virginia went on to win the next three unanswered for the 16-14 victory.

The Eagles travel to face No. 8 Pittsburgh on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 1 p.m. in Fitzgerald Field House. The match will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
