BC duo defeats squads from Wake Forest and Cal
PACIFIC PALICEDES, Calif. – The Boston College doubles team of Jackie Urbinati and Kylie Wilcox came one win away from reaching the main draw of the ITA Women's All-American Championships this week at Riviera Tennis Club.
Urbinati and Wilcox defeated Eliza Omirou and Anna Brylin from Wake Forest 8-3 on Tuesday in their first qualifying match. The following morning, the duo defeated the sixth-seeded team of Julia Rosenqvist and Olivia Hauger from California by a score of 8-6. The run finally came to an end later on Wednesday afternoon in a 6-8 loss to a Russain pair from Kansas, Anastasia Rychagova and Sonia Smagina.
"The match against California was high quality tennis and hard fought on both sides," said assistant coach John Sherwood. "One of the key factors in the win were Jackie's returns in which she made 18 of 19, and Kylie's ability to generate pace on a majority of her shots. In addition, Jackie and Kylie played well as a team - key to successful doubles."
"In our final qualifying doubles match, both Jackie and Kylie competed at a high level against some of the nation's best," added Sherwood. "There were just a few key points that didn't go our way and that made a big difference in a match that was extremely close. We're extremely proud of both of our Eagles for competing in one of the nation's most prestigious tournaments."
In singles, Iowa transfer Yufei Long lost to Rosenqvist (the fifth overall seed) of Cal 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 in her Boston College debut. She then defeated Old Dominion's Yulia Starodubsteva in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the back draw.
As a team, the Eagles are back in action next week from Oct. 11-15 at the ITA Regional Championships, hosted by Yale.
