BC leads record number of Hockey East alumni
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College leads a league record 73 Hockey East alumni who have earned a spot on National Hockey League opening night rosters. 17 former Eagles begin the season with NHL squads as the 2018-19 regular season is underway.
Brooks Orpik (1 assist) and the Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals opened their title defense last night with a 7-0 win over the Boston Bruins. With Orpik capturing the Capitals' first-ever championship last season, Boston College has had an Eagle etch his name onto the Cup on 19 different occasions. That figure pulled BC into a tie with its opening regular season opponent Wisconsin for the most representatives of any program in college hockey history. Orpik became the sixth BC alum to win multiple Stanley Cups.
29 former Eagles earned a spot on 2018-19 NHL training camp rosters, the second-most in college hockey behind only Minnesota. Former Eagle captain and 2001 national champion Brian Gionta formally retired from the NHL on Sept. 24 after 16 seasons.
Hockey East alumni are featured on 28 of 31 NHL teams to start the season. See below for the full list of BC representatives:
