October 28, 2018 | Women's Hockey
BC wins its seventh consecutive game, moves to 4-0 in Hockey East play.
ORONO, Maine – The No. 6/6 Boston College women's hockey team used three power-play goals and an empty-netter to top the University of Maine on Sunday at Alfond Arena. Cayla Barnes, Grace Bizal, Erin Connolly and Daryl Watts scored for the Eagles in the 4-1 win.
In a penalty-filled first period – BC had four power-play opportunities and fired seven shots on goal while Maine had three – saw both teams kill of some form of a 5-on-3. Maddy McArthur had a key chest save on a short break by Alyson Matteau while Makenna Newkirk's block in the high slot helped kill the penalties off.
The middle stanza gave way to back-and-forth action, with both McArthur and Carly Jackson making key saves while down. Finally, the Eagles capitalized on the power-play with Barnes and Bizal both finding the back of the net in a span of five minutes. Maine bounced back in the final frame, forcing McArthur to make a sliding save 20 seconds into the period before Tereza Vanisova cut the deficit to one 2:48 in. McArthur's left pad save on a net-front tip with 11 minutes to play kept BC on top.
With seven minutes to play, Connolly's goal pushed BC's lead back out to two goals and the Black Bears never found the back of the net again. Watts hit the empty net right as the final buzzer rang.
McArthur finished with 24 saves while Jackson had 32 for Maine. Maine finished 0-for-7 on the power-play and BC was 3-for-10. The Eagles outshot the Black Bears, 36-25.
