NC State Takes Four-Set Match from Eagles

BC outmatched by Wolfpack blockers in 3-1 loss
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team fell in four sets to NC State on Friday night in an ACC contest in Power Gym, 21-25, 16-25, 25-21, 19-25.
The Eagles (12-9, 2-7 ACC) hit for .138 percent (49 kills – 27 errors – 159 total attempts) but were out blocked 11-5 by the Wolfpack (10-9, 4-5 ACC). NC State hit at a .282 clip (57 – 17 – 142) and out dug the Eagles 71-60.
Three Eagles hit double-digit kills, led by senior McKenna Goss and sophomore Clare Naughton with 11 apiece. Naughton notched a double-double, leading the team with 15 digs and freshman Jewel Strawberry added 10 kills for BC. Junior Jane DeJarld tallied a team-high 28 assists while sophomore Amaka Chukwujekwu recorded four blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – The teams began the match trading points until NC State went on a 4-0 run to lead 7-3. BC made up some ground on short runs but still trailed, 15-10, at the media timeout. The teams split the next four points, 2-2, but BC called a timeout to settle the Eagles. A few points later, BC head coach Jason Kennedy challenged the play that put NC State up 22-15. The Eagles won the challenge, making the score 21-16, then followed it with a 4-2 surge to force the Wolfpack into a timeout at 23-20. NC State went 2-1 out of the break to win, 25-21.
Set 2 – The Eagles started the second frame down, 4-1, but came back with a 3-1 run to come within a point, 5-4. NC State halted the Eagles' progress, going 5-1 to lead 10-5 at the BC timeout. Two errors and a kill from Clare Naughton right out of the break gave BC some life, trailing just 10-8. The Wolfpack edged the Eagles 7-5 over the next 12 points, leading 17-13 at BC's second timeout, before going 8-3 after the break to take the set, 25-16.
Set 3 – BC stole a game from the Wolfpack in the third, taking the frame 25-21. After going point-for-point to start the set, knotted at 10 all, BC went on a 5-3 run to lead 15-13 at the media timeout, gaining momentum from another successful challenge. BC went on to win the next four points (19-13), sending NC State to the bench twice in the four-point span. NC State gained some ground with a 4-1 run, but the Eagles closed out the set, 25-21, on a 5-4 surge.
Set 4 – The final set was a battle in the beginning, with the teams tied through 11-11. The Eagles edged the Wolfpack, 4-3, to lead 15-14 at the media timeout. The break favored NC State, however, who went 5-0 to lead 19-15 and drew two BC timeouts. The Eagles won the first two points out of the final break, trailing 19-17, but the Wolfpack went on a 6-2 kick to take the match in a 25-19 victory.
