October 15, 2018 | Women's Tennis
Duo wins three matches before losing out to Syracuse
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Boston College women's tennis team competed at the 2018 ITA Regional Championships over the weekend, which were hosted by Yale. Five of the Eagles' six singles players registered a victory, while doubles squad Kylie Wilcox and Jackie Urbinati advanced to the quarterfinals.
"As coaches we are getting valuable information from the Fall results," said assistant coach John Sherwood. "We are able to identify areas each player needs to work on, how to compete and handle adversity, and gain a feel for how our doubles teams interact. This gives us the needed insight to be successful in the spring dual match season."
No. 2 overall seed Yufei Long posted a convincing victory over Yale's Amy Yang 6-3, 6-1 but lost to conference rival Dina Hegab of Syracuse 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 in round two. The 15-seed Urbinati defeated Oceane Garibal of St. John's 6-3, 7-5 in her first match before falling to Princeton's Clare McKee 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.
Rookie Laura Lopez beat Martina Bocchi of UMass in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Her second round match went the full three sets as she dropped a tight 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 decision to Iuliia Bryzgalova of Penn. After beating Kathy Wang of Yale 7-6, 6-3 in the first round, Natasha Irani also faced a UMass player in the second round, losing out to Jodie Lawrence-Taylor 6-2, 6-3.
Wilcox used straight sets to move past Drexel's Ghita Benhadi 6-4, 6-1 but was forced to withdraw from her matchup against Sofya Golubofskaya of Syracuse. Elene Tsokilauri was defeated in the first round by Sophia Reddy from Brown 6-2, 6-4.
In the doubles competition, Wilcox and Urbinati won three straight matches against FDU (8-6), Fordham (8-6), and Penn (8-3) to reach the quarters. The duo eventually fell to the team of Golubovskaya and Treshcheva from Syracuse in a tight match by a score of 8-6.
Long and Lopez won a pair of rounds over teams from St. John's (8-3) and St. Bonaventure (8-1) before losing out to Princeton. Tsoulikari and Irani beat a Fordham duo in a tiebreaker but dropped a 8-5 final to Rutgers in the second round.
The Eagles are back in action Nov. 2-4 at a Brown quad match in Providence. Select players will also travel to the Dick Vitale Clay Court Invitational in Lakewood Ranch, Florida.
