Eagles honored after productive week on the ice
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – A pair of Boston College women's hockey players were honored with Hockey East weekly honors on Monday following a standout week on the ice for the Eagles.
Junior Makenna Newkirk earned Warrior Player of the Week, while freshman Daryl Watts was the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week. Both were instrumental in the Eagles' 3-0-0 week in which the team out-scored its opponents 18-4.
Newkirk ranked second nationally this week in scoring, posting 10 points from three goals and seven assists. Her 3.33 points per game mark was second-best in the country among all full-time Division I players. Additionally, Newkirk's seven assists led the nation, while her 2.33 assists per game was the highest among full-time D1 players nationally. She also led the nation with a pair game-winning goals last week: Jan. 2 at Merrimack and Jan. 5 against New Hampshire. On Tuesday in the 7-3 win at Merrimack, Newkirk posted a four-point night (two goals, two assists) and followed that with a career-best five-point effort (one goal, four assists) in the 6-0 win over UNH on Friday at Kelley Rink. On Sunday, Newkirk wrapped up the week with an assist on Watts' goal in the return game at New Hampshire, a 5-1 win. Newkirk added a .580 faceoff winning percentage on the week and was tied with Watts for the nation's highest plus/minus (+8) among full-time D1 players.
This is Newkirk's seventh career Hockey East weekly honor, but her first since capturing six rookie honors in 2015-16. It's her first player of the week nod.
Watts led the nation with 12 points in three games, including nation-leading seven goals and five assists. Watts led the country in goals per game (2.33) and points per game (4.00), as well as adding nation-highs in power-play assists (3), shorthanded goals (2) and the country's only hat trick last week. She was a +8 on the week, tied with Newkirk for the highest plus/minus mark among all full-time D1 players. Watts posted multiple points in all three games, including a pair of career-high 5-point efforts: at Merrimack on Tuesday (two goals, three assists) in the 7-3 victory and on Friday against UNH (four goals and one assist) in the 6-0 win. On Sunday, added one goal and one assist – the set-up on Caitrin Lonergan's game-winning goal – at New Hampshire in the 5-1 win. This week, Watts also claimed the BC and Hockey East rookie scoring records.
