Eagles garner their first monthly awards of the 2017-18 season
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – A pair of Boston College women's hockey players claimed Hockey East's December monthly honors on Wednesday. Sophomore Caitrin Lonergan (Roslindale, Mass.) was chosen as the Warrior Player of the Month, while senior goaltender Katie Burt (Lynn, Mass.) was the Goaltender of the Month.
Lonergan copped the league's top honors for the month after posting seven points (one goal, six assists) in the Eagles' four games in December. BC went 3-0-1 in those contests as Lonergan's six assists led the league last month. She had at least one point in all four games. On Dec. 2 at Boston University, Lonergan had the primary assists on the Eagles' final two goals which broke a 2-2 deadlock and gave BC a 4-2 road win.
On Dec. 9 at Merrimack, Lonergan spurred the Eagles' come-from-behind win, factoring on BC's first three goals in a four-minute span that helped Boston College overcome an 0-2 deficit in the second period. She collected assists on Daryl Watts' power-play strike and Toni Ann Miano's goal before her shorthanded goal put the Eagles ahead for good with less than two minutes to play in the middle stanza.
This is Lonergan's first player of the month honor of her career, and the fourth monthly honor of her career after three rookie of the month recognitions in 2016-17.
Burt led all Hockey East goaltenders with three wins in December, going 3-0-1 while playing all but three seconds of the Eagles' four games. Her 1.71 goals against average was second in the league among regular starting goaltenders while she posted a .933 save percentage. Burt stopped 98 shots last month, second-most in the league in December. Against BU on Dec. 1, she made 34 saves to preserve the 2-2 tie, before posting 24, 18 and 22 saves in the final three games of the month.
This is Burt's ninth career goaltender of the month honor, and the 10th monthly award of her career overall, which includes one rookie of the month in 2014-15.
Watts was the runner-up for the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Month award, which she won in both October and November.
The second-ranked Boston College women's hockey team (16-1-3, 10-0-3 HEA) returns to the ice on Friday, Jan. 5, when the team opens its weekend series against New Hampshire at Kelley Rink. Faceoff is set for 6 p.m. The teams will meet again at 2 p.m., on Sunday, Jan. 7, at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H.
