January 03, 2018 | Women's Hockey
UNH is the only Hockey East team BC has yet to face this season
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The No. 2 Boston College women's hockey team returns to the ice this weekend for a home-and-home split series with New Hampshire.
Â
The Eagles will host the Wildcats on Friday, Jan. 5, with faceoff set for 6 p.m. at Kelley Rink. The game will be streamed live on ESPN3, which is available via WatchESPN.com and the ESPN app. The teams return to the ice on Sunday, Jan. 7, when New Hampshire hosts BC at the Whittemore Center at 2 p.m.
Â
Boston College (16-1-3, 10-0-3 HEA) enters the game riding the nation's longest undefeated streak – 10 games – and is the lone undefeated team remaining in Hockey East. New Hampshire (9-6-5, 6-3-3 HEA) comes into Friday's game third in the conference standings with 15 points, three back of second-place Providence.
Â
These will be the first two of three regular-season meetings between the teams this year. The teams will wrap up the three-game set on Friday, Feb. 10, in Chestnut Hill.
Â
The Eagles have won the last 12 games against UNH dating back to the 2013-14 season. UNH's last win came at Kelley Rink on Oct. 16, 2013, after which BC went on to win its next 48 games at home – an NCAA record.
Â
Meghara McManus is the Wildcats' leading scorer, posting 16 points in 19 games from nine goals and seven assists. A total of nine players have recorded double-figure points, including four players with 13 points (Nicole Dunbar, Julia Fedeski, Taylor Wenczkowski and Carlee Turner).
Â
In goal, freshman Ava Boutiller started the 18 of the team's first 20 games of the season, posting a 2.30 goals against average and a .924 save percentage to go with her 7-6-5 record. Kyra Smith has started two of the last three games, posting an 0.48 GAA and a .982 save percentage to back her 2-0-0 mark.
Â
For BC, freshman Daryl Watts has a nation-leading 52 points – a figure that is the top scoring figure for any hockey player in the NCAA: men or women, D1, D2 or D3. Her 52 points through 20 games is also the 11th highest season point total by a freshman in the NCAA era, and she is just one point back of 10th place and 10 points shy of fifth place.
Â
Sophomore Caitrin Lonergan is right behind Watts with 48 points and was named Hockey East's Warrior Player of the Month for December. Lonergan ranks second nationally in not only points, but also assists (27), and is third in goals (21). Junior Makenna Newkirk is also on a career pace, posting 32 points in 20 games from 12 goals and 20 assists.
Â
In goal, Katie Burt – December's Hockey East Goaltender of the Month – has started all 20 games for the Eagles. She has a 2.18 GAA and a .921 save percentage to go with her 16-1-3 record. Burt comes into the weekend seven wins back of the NCAA career wins record (114).
Â
Following the weekend series, Boston College will return to the ice on Friday, Jan. 12, when the team hosts Northeastern for the first of two games that weekend. Faceoff is set for 2 p.m. at Kelley Rink, with the return game scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 13, at 2 p.m. at Matthews Arena. Â
