Eagles Fall Short in First ACC Match
January 21, 2018 | Women's Tennis
Freshman Natasha Irani went 2-0 in first career dual match
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College women's tennis team fell to University of Virginia, 5-2, opening ACC play Sunday afternoon in Chestnut Hill.
Â
"It was a frustrating opening match," said head coach Nigel Bentley. "We made too many unforced errors and didn't compete well enough. We missed an opportunity to play better tennis. It was exciting to see freshman Natasha Irani earn her first dual match collegiate win."
Virginia clinched the doubles point, but the pair of senior Asiya Dair and freshman Natasha Irani nabbed the one Boston College (0-1, 0-1 ACC) doubles win from the No. 3 position.
Â
Junior Jackie Urbinati dropped her singles match to Chloe Gullickson at the No. 4 spot, while Dair fell to the No. 48 ranked Rosie Johanson in two 6-3 decisions.
Â
Sophomore Kylie Wilcox slated the first Eagle triumph, taking down Cassie Mercer in a three-set thriller, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Â
No. 111 ranked Meghan Kelley defeated Dasha Possokhova after coming back from a first set 7-6 loss to Possokhova.
Â
Freshman Natasha Irani recorded her second victory of the day after her 6-4, 7-5 singles win over Teodora Radosavljevi in the No. 5 position.
Â
Freshman Maria Ross came out strong with a first-set 6-2 victory, but fell in the second set and the tie break.
Â
Up next, BC will continue its home slate, hosting in-state rivals Massachusetts and Boston University on January 27 at 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
