Eagles will host Vermont for a pair of games this weekend
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The second-ranked Boston College women's hockey team returns to Hockey East action this weekend when the Eagles host Vermont for two games at Kelley Rink on Friday, Jan. 19, and Saturday, Jan. 20.
Friday's game will start at 7 p.m., while Saturday's game is set for 2 p.m. Following Saturday's game, the Eagles will host the popular – and free – Skate with the Eagles event.
Both games will be streamed live on ESPN3, which is available at WatchESPN.com and on the ESPN app.
Boston College (20-2-3, 13-1-3 HEA) welcomes UVM to The Heights after posting a mid-week victory over Harvard. On Tuesday night, the Eagles claimed a 6-2 win against the Crimson behind three points each from Makenna Newkirk (1 goal, 2 assists) and Maegan Beres (3 assists). Six different players tallied goals, while six Eagles also posted multiple-points in the victory.
Vermont (6-14-4, 3-9-3 HEA) comes to Chestnut Hill after splitting with Minnesota on the road last weekend in a non-conference series. On Friday night, the Catamounts took a 4-2 win from the Gophers at Ridder Arena, before Minnesota came back with a 6-1 victory on Saturday. 'Cats rookie Alyssa Holmes claimed Hockey East's rookie of the week award on Monday after picking up three points – including the game-winning goal on Friday night – in Minneapolis.
This weekend's series wraps up the teams' three-game Hockey East series this year, with the teams having already met earlier this year in Burlington, Vt. On Oct. 22, the Eagles claimed a 4-2 win at Gutterson Fieldhouse with Caitrin Lonergan (hat trick, one assist) and Daryl Watts (one goal, three assists) both factoring on all four goals to lead the effort.
Overall, the Eagles lead the all-time series against Vermont, 39-3-3, including a 20-3-1 record at Kelley Rink. BC has won the last 16 meetings between the teams, which includes last year's double-overtime victory in the Hockey East semifinals.
Offensively, Vermont is led by sophomore Eve-Audrey Picard's 15 points from six goals and nine assists – both team highs. Junior Alyssa Gorecki follows with 14 points (5 goals, 9 assists), then freshman Kristina Shanahan (3 goals, 7 assists, 10 points). Fifteen different 'Cats have scored goals this year, with seven posting at least three markers.
In goal, head coach Jim Plumer has used two goalies this season, with sophomore Sydney Scobee seeing action in 17 games. She has a 2.81 goals against average and a .918 save percentage to go with her 5-9-3 record. Junior Melissa Black has a 2.93 GAA and .899 save percentage with a 1-5-1 record in nine appearances.
Following the Vermont series, the Eagles return to the ice next weekend with a home-and-home series with Providence, which sits in second place in the Hockey East standings, six points back of the Eagles with two games in hand. BC will host Friday night's game at Kelley Rink, which is set for 6 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN3. Saturday's game is set for 2 p.m. at the Friars' Schneider Arena.
