Miano Picks Up Weekly Defensive Honors

Eagles’ defenseman recognized by Hockey East on Monday
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College women's hockey defenseman Toni Ann Miano earned Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honors from the conference on Monday. The Bronx, New York, product scored a career-high four goals for the Eagles on Saturday in the team's 5-4 overtime road win at Northeastern.
In Saturday's game, the senior recorded a natural hat trick in the first period, leading the Eagles to a 3-1 lead. However, after the Huskies came back to take a 4-3 lead after two periods and BC then tied it up early in the third, the teams went to overtime. Miano's fourth goal of the contest came just 28 seconds into the added session, sealing the win for Boston College to claim the weekend split with Northeastern.
Miano tied for the national lead last week in goal (4), and was also tied for the national scoring lead among all defenseman national (4 points). Miano also added a career-high 13 shots in Saturday's game.
Miano's four-goal game was the first by a BC defenseman in program history, and it was the first hat trick by an Eagle blue liner since Lexi Bender's three goals against Syracuse on Oct. 4, 2014. The four-goal game also set the Hockey East record for goals by a defenseman in a league game, breaking the previous mark of three.
This is Miano's second Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honor of her career, and the first since Nov. 14, 2016.
Miano comes into the week ranked fourth on the team in scoring with 27 points (12 goals and 15 assists). She also leads all Division I defensemen in points and goals.
The second-ranked Boston College women's hockey team (19-2-3, 13-1-3 HEA) returns to the ice tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 16, when the Eagles host Harvard in a non-conference game at Kelley Rink. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on ESPN3, which is available on WatchESPN.com and the ESPN app.
