Eagles, Hokies Play To A Scoreless Tie

Blacksburg, Virginia – The Boston College women's soccer team notched a point as the Eagles tied Virginia Tech, 0-0, in double-overtime on Friday night at Thompson Field in Blacksburg, Virginia. The Eagles had 11 shots on goal, while the defense gave up only four shots on goal. In the overtime, BC outshot the Hokies, 7-3, five coming in the first stanza.
Sophomore Jenna Bike and freshman Sam Coffey led the offense with five shots apiece while rookie midfielder Jillian Jennings had three shots. BC goalkeeper Alexis Bryant had four saves, two in overtime. The Hokies goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn came up big as she had 11 saves in the 120 minutes of action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- BC goalkeeper Alexis Bryant was busy early as she made two saves in the first 20 minutes of action. One off the foot of Jordon Hemmen in the 16th minute and a header from her off a corner kick three minutes later. The Eagles offense came alive in the 25th minute after a Sam Coffey corner kick. BC had a shot from Jenna Bike that McGlynn had to smother followed by a header from Elysa Virella off a Coffey corner kick, which she handled to keep the game at 0-0.
- The second half Virginia Tech opened up with a corner kick. The Hokies shot from Kallie Peurifoy was blocked by Allyson Swaby and cleared. Bike continued to attack the Hokies defense. She challenged McGlynn again in the 64th minute but the game remained scoreless. With 1:23 to play in regulation, Virginia Tech had a free kick from just outside the box on a hand ball call. Hokie midfielder Kallie Peurifoy shot sailed high over the goal as the game remained tied, 0-0.
- In the first overtime, Boston College just attacked from all angles. Jenna Bike hit the far post in the 95th minute followed by a shot by Olivia Vaughn which McGlynn smothered. Bike's second shot of the stanza was bobbled by the V-Tech goalkeeper and leaked towards the far post but Vaughn was seconds late and could not clean up the loose ball.
– The Eagles had a corner kick with nine second to play. Jillian Jennings sent the ball just wide of goal and the two teams were headed into the second overtime stanza.
– Virginia Tech had a number of chances in the second overtime but Bryant came up big with two saves.
- BC's best chance came with just over a minute to play when Lauren Berman's left-footed shot from 23 yards out. The Hokies goalkeeper made a diving save and punched the ball over the crossbar for the save.
– Virginia Tech's had a set piece with 31 seconds to play. The ball bounced around in the box and Mikayla Mance got a foot on the ball and the shot clanged off the outside of the goal post.
GAME NOTES
- BC out shot Virginia Tech in overtime, 7-3. BC held a 22-16 edge in overall shots.
- Freshmen Sam Coffey, Gianna Mitchell and Jillian Jennings all started along with first-year transfer Elysa Virella. Coffey and Mitchell have started all 13 games.
- Boston College leads the overall series against Virginia Tech, 7-4-3. The last two games have gone into overtime. Last year BC lost to the Hokies, 3-2, in double-overtime.
- Alexis Bryant now has six shutouts this season. She now has nine in her career at BC.
