
Eagles Yield to Pitt in Four Sets

Balido paces the Eagles’ second ACC loss.
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Sophomore Cat Balido notched 15 kills and 16.5 points in Boston College volleyball's Sunday afternoon loss to Pittsburgh, 3-1.
Despite falling in the first set, BC rallied to take the second set, 26-24. Pitt answered back with a third set win. The fourth set was anybody's but, at 24-23, a hitting error from the Eagles sealed a Pitt victory.
Balido paced the Eagles, followed by senior Sol Calvete with 9.5 points off of eight kills. Junior McKenna Goss added another nine points, as well as two service aces, and graduate Lynn Braakhuis tallied eight points. Sophomore Jane DeJarld tallied a team-high 20 assists along with three service aces, a match high.
Pittsburgh's Nika Markovic led the match with 21 points and 17 kills, hitting a .708 average. Including Markovic, the Panthers had five athletes contribute over 10 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
A kill from Calvete opening scoring in the match, putting the Eagles on the board first. The teams were evenly matched until the score hit double digits and Pitt pulled away with an 8-1 run. BC could not make a comeback and dropped the first set, 25-14.
SET 2
To begin the set, Pitt found a slight lead early, leading by as many as five points. Two kills apiece from Calvete and McKenna Goss tied the set at 21-all. A Balido kill and a service ace from DeJarld sealed the win, 26-24.
SET 3
Pitt came out of the break with a 9-2 run and maintained a hefty lead for the entirety of the third set, winning it 25-12.
SET 4
A kill from Balido opens the set, but Pitt gets right into it. The Panthers take the lead, though the Eagles don't allow any big runs. An ace from Goss late in the set ties the score at 22-all, but Pitt makes the right moves, ultimately winning the set, 25-23, and the match.
