Volleyball travels to Syracuse Wednesday evening and Pittsburgh on Saturday
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College volleyball looks ahead to its first ACC conference matches of the season, travelling to Syracuse Wednesday evening and Pittsburgh on Saturday. The games will take place at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
The Eagles are coming off a two loss weekend. After being down to Harvard 2-0, BC made a comeback and forced a fifth set, ultimately falling. They fell in five to Northeastern as well. As a team, the Eagles notched 53 kills per game, led by sophomore Cat Balido, with 31 kills total, and graduate Lynn Braakhuis contributing 33 kills as well as 23 digs. On the defensive front, sophomore Jill Strockis led the team with 32 digs over the two matches.
Head coach Chris Campbell saw valuable takeaways from the two close matches.
"Keep fighting," said Campbell. "That's the big one. In both of those matches, there were times where we could've rolled over a little bit, certainly against Harvard. You're down and to have the sand come back like that, that was really good. We couldn't finish in the fifth and that was disappointing, but the effort to get there was great. Even in the Northeastern match, we weren't playing our best volleyball but it was a great atmosphere. Even when Northeastern made a run, it wasn't easy, our group will fight the whole way through. The character there is fantastic."
The Syracuse Orange holds an 8-5 record, 2-2 for their home matches. They are coming off a two game win streak against Bingamton and Hofstra, and this will be their first ACC match as well. The Orange are led by junior middle blocker Santita Ebangwese with 119 on the season, which averages to 2.48 kills per set. Ebangwese also maintains 3.44 points per set.
"It's always fun to go play at Syracuse," said Campbell on the matchup. "It's a small gym, it's tight and close environment. It's always also a bit of a challenge. The Wednesday, mid-week match kind of throws you off a little bit. They've got a really good middle hitter and we've got to find a way of slowing her down a little bit."
Pittsburgh's current overall record is 7-4, while their home record is 3-0. This past weekend they hosted the Panther Challenge, sweeping UC Santa Barbara, Eastern Kentucky and Cleveland State in three sets each. The Panthers will play Syracuse Friday Sept. 22 before challenging the Eagles Sunday. Redshirt sophomore Stephanie Williams leads Pitt with 116 kills on the season.
Both matches will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
